Eugene Koh 4 Report post Posted November 25, 2005 AirAsia to get A320 soon BY ANTHONY CHEW IN HAMBURG AirAsia Bhd will take delivery of its first A320 aircraft in Germany on Dec 5. The plane will arrive in Kuala Lumpur on Dec 8. The 180-seat aircraft, getting the finishing touches at Airbus' assembly plant in Hamburg, Germany, will be taken to the European aviation consortium’s headquarters in Toulouse, France, where a handing-over ceremony is to be held. AirAsia chairman Datuk Pahamin A. Rajab will represent Airbus at the event. The single-aisle aircraft will be taken to the Lima Airshow in Langkawi for display on Dec 9. AirAsia has signed a purchase contract for sixty A320s and has an option for 40 more. Each aircraft costs about US$64mil. Finishing touches being put on an A320 due for delivery to AirAsia on Dec.5 AirAsia group chief executive officer Datuk Tony Fernandes said the new aircraft would be used on domestic routes. Its senior executive for publicity and promotions, Jeamie Lee, told a group of visiting Malaysian journalists in Hamburg on Monday the new aircraft would further strengthen the airline’s service network. “It will also give our passengers a better flying experience and more comfort,†she said. Lee said a second aircraft would be delivered to AirAsia by the end of December. Stuart Mann, Airbus' head of marketing for the A320 family, said the aircraft was designed to optimise revenue through cabin adaptability and passenger comfort. “It is fitted with the most modern and complete fly-by-wire technology to ensure savings in direct operating costs, besides wider seats and aisle,†he said. AirAsia chairman Datuk Pahamin Rajab will be there to take delivery of the aircraft from Airbus with another to be delivered in the same month. Thereafter Airbus will deliver the rest of the A320, which has a price tag of US$64 million (RM240.38 million), at the rate of one a month until the year 2011. Last December, AirAsia sealed a deal with Airbus to purchase 40 Airbus A320 with an option to purchase another 40 planes. It then increased its order by another 20 planes, making it a total of 100 planes. why not buy bigger aircraft arrr ??? "(Group CEO) Tony Fernandes will be on hand to welcome the A320 when it lands at KLIA on Dec 8," said AirAsia spokesperson Jeamie Lee. Various parts of the A320 were manufactured and fitted by Airbus' various plants in the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain and France before their final assembly in France. The new single-aisle A320s, which has a seating capacity of 150-180 passengers, will replace AirAsia's entire fleet of Boeing 737-300s. AirAsia will be the single largest customer of the A320 in the Asia-Pacific region after full delivery of its first order. Y. J. Foo 0 Report post Posted November 25, 2005 (edited) why not buy bigger aircraft arrr ??? Probably they need more frequency and destinatiosn than offering more seats per flight? Most American airlines do this, using twinjets for their transcon and Europe service, hence only 2 of the US major airlines still operate 747s, and none of them order A380. Plus, bigger plane=more $$$ which AirAsia has to be careful spending them, unless they want to go bankrupt within, say, 1 year? TF definitely not that stupid to expand into bankruptcy like some other carriers... Anyway, do you guys think this plane will fly international or domestic first? Edited November 25, 2005 by Y. J.
