Irregardless the old or the new one. Perhaps you should take his word with as a grain of salt.

In the 1980s. I grew up seeing 1x Fokker 27, 1x B732/734, sometimes 2xB734 or B735, 1x Twin Otter and 1x small bird from Indonesia (Bouraq) and sometimes 1x Caribou which can happen at anyone time in TWU.

In terms of BKI, the old terminal (the present T2 site) use to handle 4x 732, 1x A300B4 and 1x DC-10, 1x 732 from Royal Brunei which is what I saw at anyone time. KCH is not that far from that (used to) anyway.

I guess the old SBW must be busier than the above scene to render it the busiest airport in Malaysia. Never mind about the good old Subang airport - probably the least busy airport in Malaysia ;)

Just had a chat with a former college mate who is with Jabatan Tanah dan Survei Sarawak, who coincidently is handling land acquisition and valuation estimate etc. for MKM. Survey is in progress for the new Mukah airport, and expect to acquire in excess of 200 hectares of land.

Large deposits of coal in Mukah is expected to help develop Mukah in the years to come, and the airport is a catalyst apart from the new coastal road linking Mukah and Bintulu.

the land being acquire for the proposed MIA composed of mainly peat soil (70-90%) and more than 20ft deep and at the moment is occupied by 2 oil palm plantations. the question is, can a runway capable of accommodating B747 be construct on peat soil? even the road from Mukah-Judan-Oya seems to deteriorate within months of resurfacing and are mainly used by cars, buses, lorries etc. <_ on top of that coastal erosion is very serious around the area.>

No it's not Mukah, and No it's not Lahad Datu, It's not even Sibu, IT'S LAWAS!!!!

Didn't want to waste opening another thread...so I think I'll share it here...I'm not sure how's traffic there up north, but LAWAS really never cross my mind as the NEXT airport to undergo renovation...

Lawas? I can't believe this! Even the road to Marudi was so bad, they want to build another airport?

Hmm,wait,if i'm not mistaken, this proposed new airport will serve Lawas and also town surrounding Sarawak-Sabah border (Sipitang,Sindumin & Weston).

Don't bother doing runway capable of landing the B737/A320.Make sure the runway is capable of accepting the ATR 72-500.Since the old airport location is not suitable (located near river if i'm not mistaken),perhaps they will construct the new airport in other area.

Batang Ai airfield plan

By SHARON LING

KUCHING: The Sarawak government is considering an airfield for the remote Batang Ai constituency.

Infrastructure Development and Communications Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu told the State Assembly that studies had been carried out and five sites were proposed.

“The site at Batang Lemanak, about 25km from Lubok Antu and 28km from the Hilton Batang Ai Longhouse Resort, is considered most suitable,” he said when winding up matters related to his ministry on Wednesday.

He said a proposal for a short take-off and landing airfield with an 850m runway had been sent to the State Planning Authority for consideration.

However, he stressed that there was no decision yet on the implementation of the project.

Jabu also said a new airport would be built in Mukah to replace the existing one which could cater only to Twin Otter aircraft.

He said the airport would have a 2.4km long and 45m wide runway to cater to Boeing 737 and equivalent aircraft.

“It is still in the design stage,” he said, adding that it was part of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy development plan...
