Singapore Aircraft Leasing Orders 40 Aircraft

January 8, 2007

Singapore Aircraft Leasing Enterprise (SALE) said on Monday that it has placed firm orders with Airbus and Boeing for 40 more single-aisle aircraft in a deal worth USD$2.8 billion based on list prices.

SALE, which was acquired by Bank of China last month for USD$965 million, said it had placed a new order with Airbus for 20 A320 aircraft and would exercise 20 existing options and purchase rights with Boeing for the next generation 737 series.

The firm's clients include easyJet, AirAsia and Qantas Airways.

All 40 aircraft will be delivered between the second quarter of 2009 and the first quarter of 2012, the company said in a statement. SALE said it was still evaluating which engines to buy for the new Airbus aircraft.

The new Boeing aircraft will be powered by engines from CFM International.

The new orders placed by SALE are the first since the company was bought by Bank of China, and underscore the commitment by the bank to accelerate the expansion of the Singapore-based firm, the statement said.

Robert Martin, chief executive officer of SALE, said the firm has already placed almost all the aircraft from its existing orders for delivery through to the end of 2009.

"We are therefore extremely pleased to have been able to secure additional delivery slots for both the Airbus and Boeing single aisle products," he said in the statement.

SALE has a current portfolio of 75 aircraft and has an additional 67 aircraft on firm order.

100 more A320s for AirAsia

8 January 2007

AirAsia, the region's largest low cost carrier, has placed a firm order for an additional 50 A320s, with a further 50 A320s on option. The contract was signed on the 8th of January 2007 by Tony Fernandes, Group Chief Executive Officer of AirAsia and John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer Customers of Airbus, and brings the AirAsia Group's (Malaysia AirAsia, Thai AirAsia and Indonesia AirAsia) total orders to 150 aircraft, plus 50 options and, in doing so, makes it one of Airbus' largest customers for the aircraft type.

AirAsia placed its original order for 60 A320s in March 2005, with a re-order for an additional 40 aircraft announced at the Farnborough Airshow in July 2006. The airline currently operates a fleet of 15 A320s on a rapidly expanding domestic and regional network.

The A320s are steadily replacing AirAsia's old generation Boeing 737 fleet and are destined to do the same at Thai AirAsia and Indonesia AirAsia in 2007 and 2008, respectively. AirAsia's Kuala Lumpur hub will be fully operated with A320s by July 2007.

"We are very happy with the A320. The addition of the A320 to our fleet has helped AirAsia tremendously in our efforts to boost efficiency, enhance reliability, reduce costs and provide higher service levels for our guests (passengers). Our guests love the aircraft - leather seats, wider seat pitch and greater comfort. AirAsia just turned five in December 2006 and we have carried over 27 million guests to date. As we enter 'Chapter 2' of AirAsia the additional order will allow us to further strengthen our route network in the region by developing our hubs in Bangkok and Jakarta, connecting more points and expanding into Indo China, Indonesia, Southern China and India. AirAsia will become the second largest A320 operator in the world by year 2012," said Datuk Tony Fernandes.

"AirAsia has proved to be an outstanding success in pioneering the low cost airline concept in the dynamic Asian market. We are delighted that a very large A320 fleet will play a critical role in the airline's long term growth plans. With its unbeatable economics and enormous passenger appeal, I am confident that the A320 is destined to take AirAsia to even greater heights in the future," said John Leahy.

Should both Boeing or Airbus start look into developing of long range narrow bodies to cater for the needs of LCC long haul in the future, maybe like B737ER...

Hooi Yen,

If i'm not mistaken,Boeing has introduced the long-range version of B737.It's called B737-900ER,with Lion Air Indonesia as their launch customer.

Tamizi,

Thanks for the info. Btw, what is the range of B739ER ? Can it fly say non-stop form KUL-Europe, or with a stopover in the Middle East ?

The B739ER is meant to cater for markets with moderately high PLF, but less cargo revenue... It's range is ~3200 NM (5,925 km) which can easily do Hong Kong to Delhi, perhaps even karachi with 180 pax (see Boeing.com).

AK and the A320! Well, the deal that they are getting is awesome!

Pieter, the article you've included is very interesting! I don't know if AirAsia is leasing any aircraft from SALE. Can this be confirmed by anyone? DNF, SALE is now owned by Bank of China.
