SEOUL, June 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korean air carrier Jin Air Co. said Friday that it will nearly double the size of its passenger jet fleet by the end of 2015 and start long-haul flight services, becoming the country's first low-cost airline company to do so.

The company, the wholly owned subsidiary of full-service carrier Korean Air Lines Co., said in a news conference that it will increase its fleet size from 11 to 20.

At present, Jin Air operates 11 B737-800 jets, but this will be augmented by three B777-200ER wide-body planes in the coming months. The number of B737-800s will be increased to 17 with one jet to be added next month.

The company said the first B777-200ER jets will be incorporated into its fleet in mid-December, with two more to be leased next year. The jets are extended-range versions of Boeing's popular B777, and with a range of 9,700 kilometers, they can fly non-stop to parts of Europe, North America and Australia from South Korea.

SEOUL, Jan. 3 (Yonhap) -- A passenger jet bound for South Korea’s southeastern port city of Busan had to return to Cebu soon after takeoff on Sunday due to safety concerns, company officials said.

The LJ038 flight of Jin Air Co. carrying 163 passengers left Mactan-Cebu International Airport at 1 a.m. local time. Its return was decided about 20-30 minutes after its takeoff as some “strange noise” was heard from the front door area, according to officials.

Jin Air is a low-cost carrier owned by South Korea’s top flag carrier Korean Air Lines Co.

The plane was flying at an altitude of about 10,000 feet when the return decision was made. Some passengers complained about headaches and pain in their ears, but no serious injuries were reported.

A Jin Air official said that the strange sound might have been caused by the front door not being completely closed.

The airplane and passengers are really really lucky. The risk of the door being blown off is present.

Hope its not another case of skipping maintenance by the airline.

Wondered why there is no indication to the pilots when the door is not fully closed, and when cabin compression is not achieved? At 10K feet, there should be some cockpit protocols to follow when such issues occurred, no?

Maybe cabin door closed properly but not properly sealed when cabin pressure balanced. As far as I know there are a lot of indicators about cabin door mechanics (electronics) closed and locked on the door panel and cockpit. But pressure sealed feature is apart of massive cabin door itself and there is no indication does it sealed properly or not when not pressure yet. Except cabin altitute (cabin pressure) alert.

As you know, Cabin pressure system starts at 10K feet effectively. If there is problem about pressurization, cabin altitute alert system will be engage after 10K feet. Already, passangers healthy problems are shown to cabin pressure lack.
