Domestic Rationalisation: MAS To Reduce Aircraft And Manpower

KUALA LUMPUR, March 27 (Bernama) -- The domestic rationalisation plan will see Malaysia Airlines (MAS) reducing its aircraft from 40 to 21 and stations from 32 to 16.

This would result in the national carrier reducing its manpower by around 6,500 from its existing staff strength of 23,000.

Referring to a statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office Monday, outlining the details of the domestic rationalisation plan, MAS said that the government has committed to providing financial assistance to compensate MAS for the cost involved in the restructuring of its domestic sector.

"Our original intention was to take back the P&L for the domestic sector from PMB (Penerbangan Malaysia Bhd) in 2007 and build this out as a viable business unit. Having said that, we understand the Government's vision to establish two national champions in the international aviation sector - one in full service and the other in low cost," it said.

MAS and AirAsia will be holding a joint press conference tomorrow to provide further details on the plan.

Meanwhile, MAS managing director Idris Jala said: "We are confident that we will be able to work closely with AirAsia to ensure that connectivity and interlining issues are addressed in a timely manner and that international passenger traffic in and out of Kuala Lumpur will not be affected."

This collaboration is the beginning of a new era for the airline industry in Malaysia. MAS and AirAsia would use the current framework to build a strong platform for launching a airline powerhouse in Asia Pacific, he said.

"The government has agreed to give us a free hand in managing the network, and this will mean that we will have full control on determining capacity, frequency and pricing. Managing yields will be a key factor to ensure profitability and it's important for us to be able to manage this," Idris said.

Under the new plan, MAS would restructure its domestic operations through 19 trunk routes.

Each of these routes currently generate an annual average load of 15,000 international connection passengers, and/or 13,000 front end (business/first class) passengers. Applying these two dimensions, MAS would now operate seven routes between KL International Airport (KLIA) and Peninsular Malaysia cities, six routes between KLIA and Sabah/Sarawak, and six routes within Sabah and Sarawak.

These routes include: KL-Penang, KL-Langkawi, KL-Kota Kinabalu, KL-Kuching, KL-Johor Baharu, KL-Miri, KL-Sibu, KL-Terengganu, KL-Kota Baharu, KL-Alor Setar, KL-Kuantan, KL-Bintulu, KL-Labuan, Kota Kinabalu-Sandakan, Kota Kinabalu-Tawau, Kota Kinabalu-Labuan, Kuching-Kota Kinabalu, Kuching-Sibu and Kuching-Miri.

MH currently have 39 B737, 10 F50 and 5 DHC-6.

Looks like we will miss the F50s and the Twotters in MH colors.... whether they will be reincarnated to AK colors, time will tell.

I think F50 maybe on the edge of a clift to be sold off....Think about it...since AK also taking over the DHT routes... most prolly LHD will only be service by DHT rather than F50. But still I am hoping and praying that F50 stays for at least 5 years time.

Quote from The Star:

"Stating that neither MAS nor AirAsia would be given a subsidy to operate their domestic operations, the Government would, however, pay the low-cost carrier to operate social routes like the rural air services in Sabah and Sarawak."
