A380 Flies 5,000 Miles On Three Engines

Recommended Posts

Canada's Transportation Safety Board says Emirates Airlines elected to fly an A380 more than 5,000 miles across the Atlantic, southern Europe and the Mediterranean to Kuwait on three engines after the number four engine flamed out about an hour after takeoff from JFK. The original destination was Dubai for Flight 202 on Oct 26. "The crew consulted with the company and decided to divert to Kuwait International Airport (OKBK) on the remaining three engines where an uneventful landing took place," the TSB reported. The engine quit when the aircraft was 200nm ESE of St. John's, Newfoundland/Labrador.

Flying on three engines uses more fuel because the aircraft must fly at a lower altitude and lower speed, hence the diversion to Kuwait City. It's not clear why the crew and the company decided to press on rather than call it a day and either return to JFK or divert to several other North American airports within a few hundred miles. Maintenance personnel discovered two fuel pumps in the Engine Alliance GP7000 engine had failed and aircraft was signed off after they were replaced. It's not known how many people were on the aircraft.

I think they only had enough fuel to reach Kuwait , if they can land in Dubai they will! I also read a replacement a380 was sent to Kuwait to pick up the pax. Maybe that is why, nearer to hub better service recovery. My 2 sens.

Wah, if they can fly 5000 miles on 3 engines, means they can fly 15000 on 9 engines! :p

Why would you want to fly 15000 miles when it's nearer to go in opposite direction ?! :p

(sorry, forgot there are people here who fly solely for purpose of topping up their FF programmes :D)

Kinda makes me wonder what airplane has or had the most engines..... 8 so far is what I hear !

Ever heard of the phrase "six turning, four burning" associated with the Convair B-36?

isn't flying with 3 engines more or less the same as flying with only 1 engine? I mean, it is only 1 engine away from disaster?

Wah. 10 engine. Even if I was an octopus I wouldn't be able to operate the thrust levers :p

Maybe that is why they have a co-pilot as well up there in the front, plus all those computerized gizmos that are supposed to make redundant those two who are nominally flying the thing

Dunno, would be a difficult job trying to get the thing look symmetrical I think

Nevertheless, I understand in some point in time way past that the elephant man was also once considered a sight to behold too

:)
