People go to Stansted because of London and not Stansted....Tianjin because of Beijing...These routes are developed by MAS not D7....

Interesting spin ... so ppl flock to London and Beijing thanks to MAS, not because the cities are commercial/cultural capitals of their respective nations.

Yes most interesting spin. So MAS is in the business of developing routes for D7.... rofl.gif

Any airline that is flying new routes will have to develop the route to make it viable...duh! Otheriwse, why do you think D7 goes to all the cities that MAS fly to in India...it requires less money on A&P because the routes are already developed....D7 is supposed to compliment MAS just like MI does for SQ......

Naim, that is just few of the many example - Irrespective of the popularity of any cities, it needs the airline to develop the market because not only Malaysians wants to go there...You also need traffic both ways to make it viable. Say if you fly to Moscow, Malaysians may have interest to go there because of many of our students go there to study, but the same cannot be said to Russians! if you don't promote Malaysia, then you only have to rely on outbound traffic which will not make the route viable...

Look at all the D7 routes, how many that they developed their own? AUH? They have already pulled out because they are not making money irrespective of what being said about the suitability of the aircraft

If FY, a MH subsidiary is not complimenting MH, can one expect a non-associated company like AK to compliment MH?

Believe we should be looking from a global point of view; In the last few years, MH has been losing market share to SQ, QF, BA, VS, EK, EY, AK, etc on kangaroo route. If AK is restricted to protect MH, won’t stop other airlines from eroding into MH market share. If AK can recapture market share for Malaysia (e.g. KUL utilization, forex, tax income, service at KUL, etc), believe we all should fully support AK effort. Only narrow minded politicians would rather to have foreigners benefited than our fellow countrymen.

Why MH only look at point to point (e.g. SVO/KUL) but not beyond KUL? (e.g. SVO/KUL/SYD.MEL.PER.CGK.MNL.DPS.MLE.CMB)?

OT : I remember i once saw a flight from SYD to KUL has its destination KUL/BEY shown on the Flight Infomation Board at SYD airport. Could it be the same aircraft continue flies to BEY after KUL ? There is a hugh Lebanense population in Australia. However, this was a few years back.

I don't believe D7 is to complement MAS like MI for SQ. Silk Air is apart of the SIA group, it does not compete, it colludes, it shares certain routes with SQ and flies to thinner regional routes that SQ doesn't fly to. D7 and AK is in direct competition to MH. In that sense D7 and AK tries to find where they have the edge, which is usually at cost, this means flying to routes that MH flies to or flying to routes MH can't make it work. Air Asia is trying Calcutta when MAS has tried repeatedly to make that work. D7 caters to the pent up demand for a cheaper fare than MH. Remember MH likes flying their old dirty A330's to India, which is completely inferior to the new products offered by D7, (I'm probably gonna get flamed for saying for this). Also what are the kind of fliers that fly to Malaysia from India?

Naim, that is just few of the many example - Irrespective of the popularity of any cities, it needs the airline to develop the market because not only Malaysians wants to go there...You also need traffic both ways to make it viable. It is the airline that needs to develop the market? I think that's not really the case. One reason why I think SIN and SQ has been a lot more successful than MH is because of their home base. Singapore is the region's financial capital, also a lot of MNCs have their regional HQ based there, it attracts the front end high yield customers. Which is why for the same reason, no matter how much resources the Brunei govt throws at its airline, it will drain more money, an airline largely devoid of front end passengers, only tourists, backpackers and students. So, my point is that an airline can as hard as it wants try to develop the market, at the end of the day it is depends on market sustainability. Your example, the student and tourist groups between Russia and Malaysia, is exactly this case, its devoid of the front end passengers, it will not make much money for airlines because these travelers only look for the bargain basement fares (SQ does Russia by tying it to their flights to Houston, thereby getting the front end Oil money). There is a large enough market anywhere, heck, there's a market to Zagreb from the Croatian diaspora in Australia, but as much as MH tried to develop ZAG in the late 90's, the kind of passengers and the fares they want to pay was the problem. Many international routes to KUL remain a problem because of the type of passengers. It doesn't attract the money making front end types, because at the end of the day KUL is an only so-so business destination.

Look at all the D7 routes, how many that they developed their own? AUH? They have already pulled out because they are not making money irrespective of what being said about the suitability of the aircraft

how many have they developed on their own? Hmmm, Plenty, Bandar Aceh, Solo, Thiruchiapalli, Kochi, Triavandrum, Bandung, Vientiane, Makassar, Guilin... From the top of my head... but plenty more I'm sure. Because like I said before there's large enough market anywhere, its just a matter for these cities if AK can make it work.

What about the competition factor in AUH? AUH has EY,which has daily flights into KUL with numerous onward connections. I don't know what market D7 was going for, can't really see gulf Arabs, choosing D7 over EY or nearby EK via DXB.

MH had virtually duopoly on KUL/SIN, KUL/BKK, KUL/CGK, etc for many decades and these destinations need little A&P. Before these routes were liberalized, the fare was over 2 times more expensive than current MH Low fare.

If MH didn’t abuse its duopoly position, MH would have retained more loyal pax and market share. For a few local banks to designate AK as the preferred carrier for company travel, either AK has done an excellent job or MH was unreactive to market needs.

But the French love Abu Dhabi!

Abu Dhabi - A Desirable Destination, Says Air France

ABU DHABI, Feb 17 (Bernama) -- A senior delegation of Air France executives gave Abu Dhabi's tourism potential a huge vote of confidence following a familiarisation tour of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) capital, before the airline's planned launch of flights from Charles de Gaulle airport this May, Emirates news agency (WAM) said

Air France Africa and Middle East Manager for French Market Francois Michel said: "Abu Dhabi features a lot of attractions and enjoys a variety of major assets that make it one of the most desirable destinations in the Gulf region."

During the tour, organised by Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority (ADTA) the delegation visited Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque - one of the world's largest and most impressive, the opulent Emirates Palace and the Saadiyat Island Cultural District Exhibition in Gallery One within the landmark hotel.

They also took a Yellow Boat tour of Abu Dhabi's expansive coastline to the emerging Yas Island entertainment destination and the iconic Yas Hotel - the only one in the world straddling a Formula 1 race track.

"The Air France flights bring us substantial benefit in not only increasing capacity from France, which is one Abu Dhabi's top 10 source destinations for hotel guests, but from the its extensive route network which is particularly strong throughout north, south, eastern and central Europe as well as North Africa," said Ahmed Hussein, Deputy Director General, ADTA.

"In the run up to the launch of the Air France Abu Dhabi service we will be working closely with the carrier in further boosting awareness of the destination throughout the carrier's route network.

"It will be hosting significant media and trade delegations from France to sample our expanding attractions."

Last year, 34,881 French nationals featured among Abu Dhabi's hotel guest performance, making the country the destination's sixth largest international source market.

Just saw this!

AUHReturn.jpg

AUH is making a comeback in AK's website.

Now the million dollar question. Is AUH going to be reinstated back (probably in view of Paris Orly) or it is just a system bug?

I think it is a bug, and they fixed it. AUH is no longer in the list of destinations.

Definitely a system bug - people had some problems with their bookings in the past 24-48 hours. I believe that D7 has no plans to do one-stop services (either via India or Middle East) to Europe. Their priority is to develop APAC routes before looking elsewhare. Incidently, D7's latest A333 first flew over a month ago. Delivery should be imminent, depending on whether the financing is in place....
