Garuda's staff size had shrunk to 5,200, from 6,200. All vice-presidents are always on 24-hour alert with their BlackBerry. Major hardware overhaul. Over a third of Garuda's 70 planes are under five years old. By 2014, total fleet size will grow to 116 planes. The new aircraft (including the narrow body) are fitted with personal entertainment screens offering AVOD facilities for all passengers. The airline made US$6.6 million profit in 2007, US$65.2 million profit in 2008 and US$110 million profit in 2009. In 2009, Garuda was taken off the European Union blacklist of unsafe carriers. In May 2010, Garuda was named 'World's Most Improved Airline' by Skytrax. In December 2009, Skytrax upgraded Garuda from a three to a four-star airline. On Tuesday, 1 June 2010, Garuda's maiden Jakarta-Dubai-Amsterdam service takes off, marking its return to the European market, which it left six years ago. Flights to Frankfurt, London, Paris, and Rome or Milan will follow. GA to issue IPO (initial public offering) in the third quarter of 2010. GA wants to stand on the same pedestal occupied by SIA.
