Greg Wood 3 Report post Posted July 6, 2009 USS George Washington CVN-73 sailed into West Australian waters at 9am on July 2nd for 4 days R&R before participating in Talisman Sabre an joint military excersise hosted every 2 years between the US armed forces (US Navy, US Marines, US Army )& Australia & New Zealand armed forces. I was fortunate enough to have over flown the carrier on Saturday 4th July, co-incidently 'American Independence Day' conducting numerous orbits around he ship. Here is a sample of what I got! The weather was a real hinderance with a huge cloud that just didnt want to go away, we circled for an 1hr & 15 mins and at times was frustrated with little or no light, nevertheless we got some reasonable shots and Im happy to share with you guys here today. The aircraft carrier is due to set sail midnight tonight 6.07.09, we hope they enjoyed their visit to Perth, West Australia. Enjoy Greg

Ignatius 4 Report post Posted July 6, 2009 They should have docked at Freo so the public can get up close and view whats on deck.. It's a shame that they isolated themselves so far out. But if I were a terrorist, it's pretty easy to nail the beast down as their normal escort of frigates and destroyers aren't in sight at all. Oh yes... the sailors were reportedly abused here in Perth.. pity
Ian Moy 0 Report post Posted July 6, 2009 Well done Greg. Great photos of USS GW. Did you go with Howard?

Greg Wood 3 Report post Posted July 7, 2009 Hi all, Got some more CVN-73 George Washington photos will add tommorrow taken from the air! Ian, I flew out with Howard, he in the back seat & me in the front! The pilot flew the Cessna 172 from the R/H seat so that we could do anti clockwise circuits around the ship. We were up for 1hr.15mins and photography was difficult due to the poor weather conditions and light! But made most of the opportunity as on-board visits were not possible. Cheers Greg

Hi Waiping, I haven't flown D7 before but from my usual spotting sessions, D7's were on-time most of the time. Your flight from PER reaches KUL at around 1230 ?
