Plane spotter struck, killed by plane in St. Barths

Thursday, August 21, 2008

An American tourist taking photos of airplanes was struck and killed by a departing aircraft at the St. Barthelemy airport in Guadeloupe Wednesday.

The photographer was reportedly standing on the beach area at the departure end of runway 10 when he was struck in the head by the landing gear of a Tropical Airlines plane which had rolled abnormally long during its takeoff.

The 40 year old man was airlifted University hospital Point-with-Pitre/Abymes where he later died.

The beach is at the other side of the runway and can be seen on the picture...have never been there, but cannot imagine the authorities didn't put warning signs there, as well as at this road :nea:

and...............why at the extension of the 'centreline' when wanting to make pictures, while being 200-300 metres away would give you so much better angles ?

I'm sorry for the spotter, but this airfield is really cool... Can I touch the landing gear of the plane passing above my head, papa? I promise I'll be really careful... :p

I don't mean to bring up an old thread but I stumbled across a video in YouTube, featuring a 757 landing in Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The approach is the reverse of Kai Tak, the aircraft banks to the left instead of right and just look how close the aircraft is to the hill (and the spotters!). Check out how close the shadow is to the aircraft, less than 15 feet, I guess.

Watch the video

Some pictures taken from this airport:

What a place to have a drink and spot planes!

You definitely won't be needing Azahan's Bigma for such shot :p
