Continental Says Sorry For Flight Sewage Spill

June 25, 2007

Continental Airlines has apologized to passengers who had to put up with the stench and discomfort of overflowing toilets on a plane during a two-day flight from Amsterdam to Newark, New York, this month.

Media reports said sewage had flowed into the aisles and flight attendants kept serving meals despite the smell and mess.

"We deeply regret the serious inconvenience to our customers and are apologizing to them and compensating them for the poor conditions on the flight as well as the diversion and delay," Continental said in a statement.

Flight 71, with 168 passengers, had diverted to Shannon, Ireland, for repairs to the plane's toilets when the problem occurred. But during the journey to Newark the next day, the problem developed again.

When the plane landed in Newark, latex gloves were found in the toilet system which had blocked the six toilets on the Boeing 767, the airline said. A spokesman declined to say what form of compensation the airline was offering to the passengers.
