Plane Scare over Auckland last night

Recommended Posts

Yesterday was election day in NZ and I was at the Skycity casino of Auckland last night - umm... I wasn't really gambling but was with my g/f and a friend killing some time in the casino on the poker machine since they haven't played a poker machine before. Then suddenly I received a text message over the mobile from my friend telling me that someone stole a plane from Ardmore airport (where S Chang's pilot training school is located ) is about to crash into the sky tower and told me to evacuate immediately. I thought he was joking, so I went downstairs attempting to go up to the Skytower of Auckland. But surprisingly they are not allowing people to go up to the Skytower.

Photo of the plane involved

My friend SMSed me again and told me that the plane crashed into the sea near St. Heliers Bay at east of Auckland city. So we drove to St Heliers Bay and saw many police cars and by-standers there. A helicopter with an intensive lighting casted a beam over the crashed plane and it became appearant to us that a plane is indeed crashed into the sea.... It is the first time to see an incident of this kind.

Sent S Chang to see if he was the one who stole the plane, but no, he is alright. laugh.gif Should the plane crashed into the Skytower, we, the people below the skytower could be injured or died as well!

I will leave you guys to find out the story from here:

Renegade pilot is former flying instructor

18.09.05 1.00pm

It has emerged the man who allegedly threatened to crash a light plane into Auckland's Sky Tower last night, is a former instructor at Massey University's flying school.

The man took the Piper Cherokee without authority from the school's base at Ardmore aerodrome, and flew low over the city centre.

A police helicopter shadowed the plane's movements until it eventually crashed into the sea off Kohimarama beach in East Auckland.

Auckland city police communications manager Noreen Hegarty said in a statement to NZPA today that the pilot, who was taken to hospital about 9.40pm last night, was to be interviewed by police today.

He is believed to be in a serious but not critical condition.

The restaurants in Sky Tower had been evacuated as a precaution because of the plane's flight path, police said.

Police are carrying out a criminal investigation in tandem with the Civil Aviation Authority's safety investigation. The aircraft was recovered from Kohimarama Beach this morning when it was put onto a barge and delivered to land-based secure storage where the CAA investigators will continue their work.

Despite early conjecture that the man's actions may have been politically motivated, it is understood the man was emotionally upset over recent relationship difficulties.

He remains in Auckland Hospital with his injuries and under police guard.

For me, I am glad it wasn't S. Chang smile.gif Otherwise the police will come after me too. haha..... smile.gif

Heard from a guy who went through Massey University Bachelor of Aviation class that this instructor is what he described as "a f****** dickhead".

Can't find any news about this guy as of today.

Hey S.Chang, isn't it quite cold since Saturday? Heard Christchurch was snowing on Monday and our Christchurch office was closed! Flights were delayed and passenger were stranded at the airports. How lucky tongue.gif Have you been flying lately?

hey man

yupe, is true that a man threathened to fly into sky city. And the reason was because of a relationship failure... how dumb can that be???

it was a cessna plane anyways, won't be collapsing the skytower.. will probably shatter all the glasses and send a mild vibration down the structure on ELECTION day..

anyways... Labour Rules! =)
