BEIJING, Jan 24 (Reuters) - A Singapore Airlines Boeing 777 made a successful emergency landing at Beijing airport on Wednesday after an engine caught fire, Xinhua news agency said.

"Both the aircraft and the passengers are safe," Xinhua said, quoting Chinese civil aviation authorities. It did not give details.

The aircraft, bound for Singapore, took off from Beijing at 0045 GMT, a spokeswoman for the airline's Beijing office told Reuters by telephone. She said she did not know of any fire.

"We were informed that the aircraft had suffered some technical malfunction and had to return to the airport," the spokeswoman, surnamed Ma, said.

Singapore Airlines plane lands safely in Beijing after engine fire alert

BEIJING (AP) - A Singapore Airlines passenger jet carrying more than 240 people landed safely at Beijing's airport after an engine fire alarm went off Wednesday, the airline said.

Although there was no fire, the airline said the pilot acted correctly in returning the plane to the airport.

"There is no evidence present of fire, damage or elevated temperatures,'' the airline said in a statement, adding that the alarm may have been tripped by an airflow disturbance that affected heat insulation on the plane's right engine.

There were no injuries in the incident.

The airline said flight SQ811 was an hour and 40 minutes into a trip from the Chinese capital to Singapore when the pilot decided to return to Beijing due to the alarm.

It said the Boeing 777-200 plane was carrying 227 passengers and 16 crew.

Earlier, a Beijing airport official said the plane was forced to return because there had been a fire in the engine.-AP

BEIJING (XFN-ASIA) - A Singapore Airlines plane was forced to return to Beijing not long after taking off today, following an engine fire detection alarm, the company and China's aviation administration said.

The plane landed safely at around 10:30 am (0230 GMT) and none of the 227 passengers and 17 crew members were hurt, said the General Administration of Civil Aviation in a statement on its website.

Flight SQ811, a Boeing (nyse: BA - news - people ) 777-200 service from Beijing to Singapore, returned to Beijing airport an hour and 40 minutes after it took off due to the activation of an engine fire detection alarm, said a Singapore Airlines (other-otc: SGPJF.PK - news - people ) statement.

The company said there was no confirmation the alarm was activated by a fire but the pilot returned the aircraft to Beijing as quickly as possible.

However, the General Administration of Civil Aviation statement said an engine on the right side of the aircraft caught fire and the plane returned to the Beijing after the fire was put out in mid-air.
