A flight from Sydney to Malaysia has been turned around over NSW after a mid-air "emergency incident".

The plane is currently sitting on the end of the runway with emergency vehicles nearby.

The flight yesterday, operated by 9M-MTK, was eventually cancelled. It has now departed SYD to KUL as MH122D, departing at 2:16pm local time.

9M-MTL operating today's MH122 has also departed SYD without incident at 1:26pm local time.

This could be first and last time two MH A330-323s sitting side-by-side at SYD.

From what has been going about. Fella was already a bit unhinged prior to boarding phase. Then had a mental breakdown during flight refuse to sit and grab his backpack, sprouting religious nonsense to passengers and crew. Crew ask him to sit he uttered something about his bag which irks the crew and they kept telling him to stop touching his bagpack which he did not complied. Information relayed to pilots, which then decided to turnback for an overweight landing. Few Crew then restraint him back to his seat which caused a minor commotion and 1 of them decided to sit beside him to continue having a 1 to 1 conversation.

Upon landing as per terror SOP for SYD plane had to exit runway and remain on the turning point of the taxiway. Passengers being stuck for nearly 3hours on the tarmac as tactical team had to assess the security risk regarding with what that passenger has mentioned as potential bomb risk. In the meantime the passenger decided to pray on the isle. Of all things he also mentioned the entire thing about the threat he made was a joke lol. 3 hours of waiting later problematic passenger removed by security followed by passengers deboarding via buses. Crew stayed in the aircraft as anti bomb team had to sweep the entire aircraft for explosive and found nothing as expected. Aircraft finally towed to gate crew exit.

Disruptive passengers has always been an issue. Recall there was even a fake grenade being used on one of the MH flights many years back. Now with depression, you have cases like the passenger opening the  Asiana A321 door on approach.

From what was aired on Aussie telly, there was at least one other pax having a shouting match with the fella

Dunno lah, pretty dumb thing to do in my opinion - why go inflame further someone who was clearly not in 'correct' state of mind already ? 😒

The bitter truth is not everyone is trained to handle individuals with mental illness. Someone decided to be hero. Luckily the suspect has no gun or sharp items with him.

Kind of curious why did they wait for three hours after landing to remove the crazy fellow? Would like to know the AFP police SOP. Oh well, good that it ended well, but not for pax.

Kudos to the MH crew for entertaining the fellow bullshit. LOLX!

As for the long wait i have no idea. Probably the team need to assess if they're active explosives rigged on the plane.

Anyhow that turning taxiway has been designed as quarantine point for any hijacking scenario.

A lot of airline hostage situation in the past takes a very long time to settle. Some taking up to days. This one took a while as he mentioned he had a bomb in his bagpack. If it was a drunk or a karen on a tirade it would usually be settled way quicker.

Yea, watched this video earlier. He is crazy.................Reminds me of the Indian Airlines Flight 814 which was hijacked on 24 December 1999, only ended on December 31, 1999 with exchange of three radical Islamist terrorists held in prison in India!!! o.0

The 'hero' status probably restricted only in that particular chap's ego mindset - I imagine there would have been many sane fellow pax wishing he would just shut up and go incognito 😀

Yes, that 'hero' probably did not take up much consideration as to likelyhood of the unstable guy's ability to harm others

Plus, if he really believed a few harsh words will even help to diffuse the situation ....... 🙄

As I said, pretty dumb ..... probably far fetch, maybe the law enforcers could press charges against the 'hero' for aggravation of the peace ..... 😁

Canberra man charged after bomb threat forces U-turn of Malaysia Airlines flight bound for KL

New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb defended the time taken for police to board the plane and arrest Arif.

“The important thing is to try and defuse and not escalate the situation, and so I praise the crew for what they did in in keeping the passengers calm, particularly the person who has been arrested now, to de-escalate this situation to the point that we got this matter resolved within three hours,” she said.

“I know it’s terrifying for those people onboard and their families outside,” she said, but “the protocol in Australia is to negotiate.”

“We don’t storm planes. We’re not TV. It’s not the movies. We want to protect the lives of all passengers.”
