flee 5 Report post Posted November 23, 2012 November 23, 2012 16:27 PM CHENGDU, China, Nov 23 (Bernama) -- Daocheng Yading Airport in southwest China's Sichuan Province, the world's highest-altitude civilian airport, will start operations in May, following the success of a test flight on Friday, according to a source with the airport. An Airbus A319 passenger plane from Air China, the country's flagship carrier, successfully landed at the airport in Daocheng County, Garzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, after flying there from Chengdu, the provincial capital. Air China is expected to launch the one-hour flight between Yading and Chengdu in May, China's Xinhua news agency quoted Tan Heng, an airport official, as saying. Construction of the airport located 4,411 metres above sea level was completed in August this year. Bangda Airport of Qamdo in Tibet, located 4,334 metres above sea level, previously held the record as the world's highest-altitude airport. The airport is 130 km from Yading Nature Reserve, a national-level reserve in the eastern part of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau that features beautiful alpine valleys. For its scenery, Yading is known as "the last Shangri-La" and "the last pure land on the blue planet."

flee 5 Report post Posted November 23, 2012 If I remember correctly, it is 5 km. Edit: Did some checking on the Net and found this: The cost of the airport with a 4,200-meter runway and four tarmacs, comes to 1.5 billion yuan (237 million U.S. dollars). The annual passenger throughput is estimated to be around 500,000 for 2013. Naim 6 Report post Posted November 25, 2012 Highest airport I've been is Lhasa Gonggar, at 3600m. Already can get mild altitude sickness at this level.
flee 5 Report post Posted September 17, 2013 China opened the world's highest civilian airport on Monday, in a restive and remote Tibetan region of southwestern Sichuan province, which will cut journey times from the provincial capital from two days to a little more than one hour. Daocheng airport in Garzi, a heavily ethnic Tibetan part of Sichuan, is 4,411 meters (14,472 feet) above sea level, and overtakes Qamdo airport in Tibet, which sits at 4,334 meters above sea level, for the title of world's highest.
