RMAF Sungai Besi Airbase to Complete Move by End-2016

Recommended Posts

Prime Minister Najib Razak today named Sendayan in Negeri Sembilan as a new base for the Royal Malaysia Air Force (RMAF), replacing the military airport in Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur.

Najib made the announcement after visiting the Syed Sirajuddin Camp's community rehabilitation centre in Gemas.

The prime minister, however, declined to elaborate when the project could start or the scale of the project.

Defence Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who was at the news conference, said a detailed announcement would be made later.

Air Force chief Rodzali Daud was reported by a local media today as saying that the contract for the new base would be signed next month.

Sendayan is located 12km from Seremban.

The RMAF land in Sungai Besi - one of the last remaining premium real estate in Kuala Lumpur city - will be redeveloped.

In search of civil service's optimal size

In another development, Najib said the government would implement new strategies to come up with an optimum size of its civil service.

At the moment, there was a three-month freeze for the intake of new staff to fill up posts that had been left vacant, he said.

The right-sizing exercise would benefit the country in terms of a more productive civil service, he said.

"This will also mean that government employees will get a better benefit in the future," he said.

Is the move absolutely necessary? And why can't SZB be used instead??

From what i heard, SZB is STILL going to be used. infact, half of the airframes from Sg Besi will be restationed in SZB.

Also the reports also said that the air force museum will still be in Sg Besi.

P.S. clarification from Dzirhan Mahadzir: THe Sendayan base is just an admin base, and also for training purposes. something like the one in Puchong there?

10th squadron will be moved totally to Subang.

also here is a piece from The Edge: http://www.theedgeproperty.com/news-a-views/3107-1mdb-malton-to-redevelop-rmaf-base.html

as it says, the runway will still be there - most probably to be GA only.

KUALA LUMPUR: The relocation of the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) Sungai Besi airbase has started and is expected to be completed by end-2016, said the master developer of Bandar Malaysia, 1MDB Real Estate Sdn Bhd (1MDB RE), a wholly-owned unit of 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

Also known as the Kuala Lumpur Airbase by most military personnel or Sg Besi old airport by locals, the defence facility located in Jalan Lapangan Terbang Lama has been earmarked by the government to be relocated to different sites throughout the country to make way for the development of the 198ha Bandar Malaysia.

1MDB RE has been tasked with developing these sites for the RMAF, Royal Artillery Regiment (31 RAD) and the air wing of the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM).

“The Bandar Malaysia development will be located at the current Pangkalan Udara Kuala Lumpur (RMAF) in Sungai Besi.
