Naim 6 Report post Posted April 12, 2011 Air France jet clips small plane at NY JFK airport WASHINGTON | Mon Apr 11, 2011 11:07pm EDT (Reuters) - An Air France Airbus 380 jetliner clipped the tail of a smaller regional jet on the ground at New York's John F. Kennedy airport on Monday night, but no injuries were reported, the Federal Aviation Administration said. Air France Flight No. 7, en route to Paris, and a Comair "Canadair" regional jet were involved in the incident, FAA spokeswoman Laura Brown said. Comair is a unit of Delta Air Lines. "The Airbus 380 struck the vertical stabilizer of the Comair plane, basically struck the tail of the plane. The Comair plane evacuated passengers on the ramp. There were no reported injuries," Brown said. The smaller aircraft was damaged, she said. A CNN correspondent who was on the Air France flight said the incident occurred while the Airbus was taxiing to the runway for takeoff. The Airbus 380 can carry more than 500 people, while the Comair Canadair carries about 100. http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/04/12/us-airfrance-incident-idUSTRE73B0LD20110412?WT.tsrc=Social%20Media&WT.z_smid=twtr-reuters_%20com&WT.z_smid_dest=Twitter

Loh Wilson 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2011 Wow, look at the amount of force, it almost push the smaller plane 90 degree left. I wonder which plane is at the wrong place and wrong time. One of the comments from the youtube link Ladies and gentlemen please remain seated with your seat belt fastened until the plane has come to a complete stop at the gate. NOW I KNOW WHY!! U are welcome... seem that A380 are prone to accident due to their size, hopefully not a serious damage. Must be a nightmare for AF to re booking all passengers back to CDG. Michael Chai 0 Report post Posted April 12, 2011 (edited) I think the A380 wing also suffer a bit damage. Look carefully on how the wing goes up after striking the tail of the canadair. So from the story, we also learnt a lesson as well. Do not unfasten your seatbelt until the plane reached the terminal gate. Geoff R. 0 Report post Posted April 13, 2011 Pretty scary for crew and passengers on the CRJ. I wonder if anybody was injured on the CRJ? Over 1.2 million hits on Youtube already! Geoff

Sri Ramani K. 0 Report post Posted April 13, 2011 Taking space for granted, the 380 pilots...? That would definitely be the case if and only they were not taxiing on the center line of the taxiway. Just wondering if the relevant airport authorities actually did any calculations of the A380 wingspan and if that particular taxiway was approved for an A380 to taxi or if that CRJ's total fuselage length allowed it to be parked at that particular parking bay. So many questions left unanswered.
Pieter C. 5 Report post Posted April 13, 2011 Air France A380 Collides On JFK Taxiway April 12, 2011 US investigators have impounded an Air France A380 which collided with a smaller jet at New York's John F. Kennedy airport on Monday but the airline says transatlantic A380 flights will be unaffected. The Airbus superjumbo, the world's largest airliner with a wingspan of almost 80 metres (yards), hit the tail section of a Bombardier CRJ regional jet which spun in a quarter turn on the taxiway, according to amateur video. A CNN correspondent on the Air France flight to Paris reported that he felt a "slight rumble akin to hitting a patch of rough pavement" as the plane with over 500 people on board was moving on the ground at about 8.15pm local time on Tuesday. The correspondent said about a foot of the Air France superjumbo's left wing appeared to be damaged. Air France confirmed the incident and said both aircraft had been "immobilised" pending an investigation. A spokeswoman declined to estimate the time and cost of repairs to the wing. Air France, which flies five times a day to New York including one flight using the Airbus double-decker, will operate its daily A380 flight on Tuesday as normal, she said. "Air France confirms an A380 operating flight 007 on April 11 between JFK and Paris-Charles de Gaulle, with 495 passengers and 25 crew on board, struck with its left wing the tail of a Comair CRJ-700 which was parking at JFK," the spokeswoman said. "This collision caused only material damage. The two aircraft have been immobilised and the passengers were given accommodation or placed on (other) flights," she added. Europe's largest airline has four Airbus superjumbos in its fleet but has switched to a smaller aircraft on flights to Tokyo due to a drop in demand following last month's Japan earthquake, leaving spare capacity to replace the A380 on New York trips. It is due to take delivery of two more A380s in coming weeks and plans to add Washington, Montreal and San Francisco to its A380 network that includes New York, Tokyo and Johannesburg. Air France says it plans to restore Tokyo A380 flights in September. Amateur video footage showed the 70-seat regional jet operated by Delta subsidiary Comair rocking sharply to one side as the colliding A380 wing flipped it into an almost 90-degree turn to the left. There were no reports of injuries. (Reuters) . ------------------------------------- So the CRJ was not at it's final parking position as yet, when it was hit by the 380...
