Perth flight aborted after 'technical glitch'

Malaysia Airlines have denied one of its Boeing 777's experienced total engine failure in one engine during an aborted takeoff from Perth Airport last week, citing only technical difficulties.

Passengers onboard Malaysia Airlines flight MH124 to Kuala Lumpur, which was scheduled to leave Perth at 4.30pm last Thursday but taxied about 7pm due to delays, felt the aircraft brake heavily halfway through takeoff.

A passenger who only wanted to be known as Patrick, from Ferndale, said it was lucky the plane hadn't been further down the runway.

He said the captain announced the takeoff had been aborted due to a technical glitch but later overheard a Malaysian Airlines official say it was more serious.

"I went to the MA office upstairs to rebook and heard a woman on the phone say 'total engine failure on number one engine'," Patrick said. "I didn't enquire further and we weren't told anything more. If it happened to Qantas we all would have heard about it."

A spokesman for Malaysia Airlines would only say the takeoff was aborted due to "technical issues."

"At 7.03pm, the aircraft taxied but had to abort take-off as there were problems with one of the engines," the spokesman said. "In the interest of passenger safety, the decision was taken to overnight the flight to facilitate the repairs."

The airline said it regretted any inconvenience experienced by passengers, who were provided with meals and accommodation at a nearby hotel as the aircraft was repaired.

"All passengers were reallocated on flight MH126 and MH124 the following day," the spokesman said. "The aircraft which was repaired at Perth departed to Kuala Lumpur at 6.00pm the next day."

Got to love armchair experts!

Spares were sent on the next available flight which wasn't until MH125 the following day, and within 90mins of that a/c leaving, MH124D was airborne for KUL
