BUFFALO, N.Y. – An emergency director says there have been "multiple fatalities" after a Continental Express plane with 48 people aboard crashed into a suburban Buffalo home and erupted in flames.

Authorities say Flight 3407 from Newark, N.J., hit a house in Clarence around 10:10 p.m. Thursday.

Clarence emergency control director Dave Bissonet says the crash killed one person on the ground and an unknown number of people on the plane.

He says the plane was approaching Buffalo Niagara International Airport, about 10 miles away.

Twelve homes near the crash site have been evacuated.

Continental Airlines says the Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 operated by Manassas, Va.-based Colgan Air was operating between Newark Liberty International Airport and Buffalo Niagara International Airport.

A Continental Express Dash 8-Q400 crashed into a house while approaching Buffalo Niagara International Airport. Reportedly all 44 passengers and four crew on the aircraft have died, as well as one person on the ground.

The aircraft was operated by Colgan Air. The cause of the crash isn't known yet but the bad weather and icing conditions are factors being taken into account.

Link to the ATC recording of Buffalo Tower around the time the Continental Express Q400 crashed near Buffalo Airport on February 12.

The crashed aircraft is Colgan 3407. Note the difference in the voice of the pilot between the transmission around minute 14:05 and the last transmission from the aircraft around 15:05 - you can clearly hear some distress in her voice.

After this, it takes some time for the controller to realise something is terribly wrong. At 20 minutes into the clip, he is asking other crews whether they can see anything on the ground. They then try to determine whether there are any icing conditions that may have caused the accident.

(Personal note: this accident is a blow to Continental Airlines, following the accident in Denver last December. Although the plane was not operated by Continental, general public perception will be that is was.)

As per local TV reports, eye-witnesses say the a/c nosedived into a house, and weather was bad with it was raining wet snow at that time.

Also, they say the eyewitness' description described a similar phenomenon in American Eagle's ATR tailplane icing problem crash in 1994, where ice buildup accumulated on the wings faster than the de-icing boots could remove it. This caused the a/c to stall.

This is the worst ever Dash 8 accident. Bangkok Airways has one incident with Dash 8 before, but not as many casualties as this Continental.

This is Continental first incident with total live lost ever since using current livery.

It's also first total lost ever since the 707 crash 32 years ago.
