Armed robbers at airport carpark make off with gold ingots

BERNAMA

PENANG, Mon.:

A gold supplier from Dubai and a jewellery shop owner were robbed of six gold ingots worth over RM800,000 at the Bayan Lepas International Airport carpark here today.

Penang Criminal Investigation Department head SAC II Wan Abdullah Tuanku Said said the incident happened at 10.30am after the jewellery shop owner in his 40s came to fetch the gold supplier at the airport.

He said three men, believed Vietnamese and two of whom were armed with a gun each, approached them when they were getting into a car.

“The two men aimed their pistols and ordered the two victims to bend down and squat while the other criminal took two bags containing the gold ingots weighing 5.9 kilogrammes from the back of the vehicle,” he told reporters.

The robbers fled in another car parked nearby.

Wan Abdullah said police had set up roadblocks along several roads out of the state to nab the suspects. He added that police were investigating how the robbers knew the arrival of the supplier from Dubai.

Boy that's a surprise.... the layout of PEN's parking area at night is just like at the back of an alley....

Based on the closure of the inner lane of the departure drop-off area at KUL due to the much-publicised shooting incident, I guess MAB/ police will now also close the parking area of PEN.

I just do not understand why the inner lane at KUL is now only for VVIPs. So, any armed robbery can now only occur at the outer lane area?

It's a shame that they close it, kinda pointless having those unused facilities...now the airport looks odd with only outerlane in use. A bit chaotic during morning/night rush hour, I remember that the taxi driver has to wait another car to pull out so he can drop me off

I agree with Gavin opinion...How the robberies know that particular persons have gold ingots with them??...Other thing is, if it true, the robberies are Vietnamise and it something scary..

But why the jewellery shop owner didn't hire any extra security if they realize they bring high risk item..Security around airport compound is not main issue for this case..But it seem like PEN airport a strategic place to do this "business"..Last month an attempt to rob money changer beg also occur at PEN..

Being in the jewellery business and having travelled with such high-risk items, i think i can answer your question.

First of all, being escorted by 4-5 bodyguards will basically draw unnecessary attention to ones self if one is carrying high risk items, and as such, what is stopping the robbers from shooting the bodyguards, and STILL making off with your goods? Ok, you might argue that the bodyguards will fight back, but imagine the hassle one has to go through to acquire bodyguards who are armed (paperwork, salary, red-tape etc) and if the 'robbery' is botched, one still has to live with a dead bodyguard or two and go through all sorts of OTHER hassles.

I know many people who travel around the world with gold bullion, diamonds, currency etc, and who have never been robbed or tailed in their lives. At first glance, they might be mistaken for a 'bangla worker' or a 'Maulana Umar'. The key to a successful 'transfer' is that one must be EXTREMELY low profile. No 'spotting' or 'anjung tinjau model photography'. ( :p )

Based on the attached picture in The Star, the person who was robbed wasn't dressed extravagantly at all (Collared shirt and slacks), and this lends credence to Gavin's point of it being an inside job.
