Wing part breaks off Indonesian jet

Thursday Nov 22 23:49 AEDT

AP - A two-metre-long piece of wing broke away from a jetliner minutes after it took off from Indonesia's main international airport, but the plane managed to land safely, an airport official says.

The incident late Wednesday adds to concerns about the safety of flying in Indonesia, which suffered a series of accidents earlier this year that killed more than 120 people.

The wing section measuring around two metres by 1.5 metres fell from the Boeing 737 shortly after it left Jakarta's Sukarno-Hatta airport on a domestic flight, said Totok Suwarto, a senior official there.

Suwarto said the plane was operated by Batavia Airways, one of scores of cheap airlines to appear in Indonesia in recent years. A Batavia spokesman declined to comment.

Suwarto said the plane returned to Sukarno-Hatta without incident.

The Detik.Com news Website said the wing piece hit a house not far from the airport, but there were no immediate reports of injuries.

The cause of the accident was being investigated, Suwarto said.

As a result of the accidents earlier this year, the European Union blacklisted all of Indonesia's airlines and the US Federal Aviation Administration downgraded the nation's rating to its lowest category.

Oh my, I have been onboard PK-YTP 3 times since I started recording the aircraft registration number. It is a Boeing 737-400 and all 3 journeys were on the PNK-CGK-PNK routes. But alas, this news is not something big as it happened quite frequent to Batavia. The last of such incident was when a landing gear collapsed in an airport in Kalimantan (Banjarmasin or Balikpapan) early this year, similar with the recent Mandala mishap. Hey, this is Indonesia and please, fly Batavia Air - Trust Us to Fly!

It came up as the front page news today.

The aircraft was indeed heading to PNK as flight 7P 207 with 138 passengers onboard. The pilot was Captain Wawan Setiawan, whom reported a hydraulic failure to the ATC 10 minutes after taking off at 5,000 - 6,000 feet altitude.

Passengers reported saw smoke and a fluid coming out from the left wing. The debris of the wing was found in pieces by villagers of Dusun Malang, Desa Gempolsari in Tangerang near CGK, after it hit a roof of a house in the village. It was reported that the largest piece is measured around 100 m2.

The initial investigation reported that the cause is probably due to pemasangan pengikat bahagian sayap pesawat yang tidak mengikut prosedur, karena tidak menggunakan baut dan mur (the installation of the mentioned part of the wing, which was not conducted according to the procedure, as it was evidenced that the installation was carried out without the usage of items called baut and mur [perhaps some kind of screws?]).
