Ellist 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2006 TAWAU: Hundreds of MAS and AirAsia passengers were stranded at the Tawau Airport, when three morning flights from Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur were cancelled due to the haze here. Tawau Airport manager Ahmad Madin said two flights from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau did not take off because of the haze in Tawau while the AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur was forced to land at Kota Kinabalu. The flights from Kota Kinabalu to Tawau and vice-versa were operational again in the evening. [The Star Online] hmm...The airport is equipped with ILS...I m wondering is it ILS also doesnt help much if the visibility is very low?
Tony 1 Report post Posted November 2, 2006 depends on the ILS level? IIRC, Sydney ILS is only to 200ft off the ground.
Teoh Z Yao 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2006 ILS is a precision approach system, but visual contact with the runway must still be established before the final approach can be continued. Every approach has what is called a DH or DA. This is the height/altitude for which the pilot must decide whether to continue the approach or not, and one of the criteria to continue is to establish visual contact. You surely don't want to emerge from the haze only to see you are off-set from the runway centerline by a quarter of the runwau width, with only 40 ft to spare... Brennan Raj 0 Report post Posted November 2, 2006 ic....Which means although established with ILS, the pilot also must hav visual contact with the runway? Yes, at DH/DA , if you cant see the runway, you execute a Missed Approach and go somewhere else with better weather...
