Aeroflot to operate cargo unit as subsidiary

Aeroflot to operate cargo unit as subsidiary, replace DC-10Fs with MD-11Fs for international flights.

Monday October 16, 2006

Aeroflot said last week that it now will operate its cargo unit as a separate, wholly owned subsidiary and will lease six MD-11 freighters for delivery in 2008 to replace four aging DC-10s that will be relegated to domestic duty.

Aeroflot Cargo will focus on continuing to build up operations at its European freight hub at Frankfurt Hahn, which recorded a 20% year-over-year increase in cargo traffic for the first six months of 2006.

HHN expects to handle 245,000 tons of cargo this year. Aeroflot carried 42,017 tons in the first three quarters, up 13% from the same period last year and 12 times more than in the first nine months of 2002, when it still hubbed in Luxembourg. It operates an average of 13 flights a week from HHN to points in Russia and the Far East and accounts for an average of 50% of cargo flights arriving at and departing from the airport.

"The establishment of Aeroflot Cargo and associated plans for expansion require that we collaborate even more efficiently in the future with Frankfurt Hahn airport," new CEO Andrej Goryashko said in a statement.

:good: Good to see more MD11's active in Europe !!! :good:

2008! wow! that wold indicate the MD11Fs are hot hot hot! Wonder if Transmile is fighting for any of these?? I believe that LH Cargo is replacing their MD-11F fleet, so that would bring some into the market.
