Denny Yen 0 Report post Posted May 20, 2006 In 2002, a shoulder-fired rocket attack was made against an Israeli charter aircraft taking off from Nairobi. The attackers used a "fire-and-forget" rocket. Nevertheless, the airliner unscathed and the passengers didn't even know about the deadliness of the attack until the captain announced it upon entering Israeli airspace. http://www.guardian.co.uk/kenya/story/0,,850385,00.html Following the attack, an airline pilots' association raised some serious concerns about it. http://www.capapilots.org/releases/041105.html Recently a TV documentary speculated that the success in countering the attack could have been due to a counter-measure device fitted under the plane's fuselage. The technology used is called DIRCM (Directed infrared countermeasures systems) and is still being used by US and British forces. Denny Yen 0 Report post Posted May 21, 2006 Out of curiosity , is the capability as depicted in the movie Air Force One similar to this? The type of counter-measure shown in the movie uses flares. The DIRCM system is similar to the hi-energy laser used on USAF's flying airborne laser platform. Its like a minituarized version of the platform. It was originally used on a converted 742 (E-3) during Ronald Reagan's presidency term dubbed as "SDI Star Wars". The USAF is now testing an improved version on a 744. http://news.com.com/Are+laser+weapons+read...08-6059967.html
