JAL simplifies baggage allowance policy

Recommended Posts

Japan Airlines (JAL) will simplify its check-in baggage policy from April 1, 2011 for all international routes.

Instead of the previous system, which used piece or weight system depending on routing, JAL will now adopt a piece system across the board with increased free baggage allowance.

Under the new policy, economy class passengers will be allowed to check-in two pieces of baggage, each weighing no more than 23kg. Executive and first class passengers will now be able to check in three pieces, weighing a maximum of 32kg each. All passengers are entitled to check-in a maximum of seven bags regardless of class of travel.

Charges for checking in a third bag start from JPY10,000 (US$100) per piece on international routes. Charges for overweight bags start from JPY6,000 (US$60) per piece for bags weighing between 23kg and 32kg. For bags exceeding 32kg, charges start from JPY45,000 (US$450) per piece.

This baggage allowance system was previously only used for flights to the US and Canada. For flights to other destinations, economy class passengers were only allowed to check-in a total of 20kg; executive class passengers were allowed a total of 30kg; and first class passengers were allowed 40kg in total.

For more information on the baggage allowance, click http://www.jal.co.jp/en/other/info2011_0304baggage.html.

Hopefully all airlines will implement across the board system. With the new policy JAL Y pax can have 46kgs! if my maths is correct.

Wish SQ, MH and BI hav the same system. So that uni students like me do not need to worry about weight limit.
