S V Choong 4 Report post Posted February 19, 2011 (edited) Backgrounder: Wellington, capital city of New Zealand, is notorious for its strong wind. Due to the limited available land and population size, Wellington airport's runway remained relatively short. At best it had been able to accomodate scheduled Air NZ/ Qantas Boeing 767-300ERs and Qantas' B747-SP services (pre-767 days). The days of the widebodies are gone in Wellington and it has been so for nearly 10 years since NZ introduced A320 on the trans-Tasman services and QF (Jetconnect) had been using both 737-300/400 or 737-800s across the ditch. On 9 February 2011, while promoting their new aircraft and new seats across the country, Air New Zealand sent their first and latest 777-300ER, registration ZK-OKM to Wellington and crews were given special training to deal with landing at the short run-way.
