Malaysia Airlines Voted The Best Airline To Asia

January 18, 2006 18:59 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia Airlines has won the "Best Airline To Asia" award in the 2006 Travel Weekly Globe Awards polls conducted by Travel Weekly, a United Kingdom (UK) based magazine.

The award was received by regional manager for UK and Europe, Lim Cheng Hoe on behalf of the national airline at a presentation ceremony held in London last weekend.

Managing director Idris Jala said the recognition by Travel Weekly was a testimony to the superiority of Malaysia Airlines' enhanced product and service standards that it have consistently delivered.

"Malaysia Airlines is no stranger to winning awards for its high quality products and services. We thank the readers of Travel Weekly and travel agents in the UK who voted us for this award," he said in a statement.

This year is the 29th Anniversary of the Travel Weekly Globes, the number one UK travel industry awards, which recognises excellence amongst travel industry suppliers.

Voting is entirely by travel agent readers of Travel Weekly and collated and audited by AC Nielsen, the travel industry's only official data analyst.

Malaysia Airlines, the national carrier of Malaysia, currently operates 22 weekly flights between Malaysia and UK, linking Manchester and London with Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia as well as London with Penang and Langkawi in Malaysia.

Currently operating 111 aircraft, Malaysia Airlines' fleet is one of the world's youngest, flying more than 48,000 passengers to over 110 destinations across six continents everyday.

Malaysia Airlines holds a lengthy record of service and best practices excellence, having received more than 100 awards in the last 10 years, among others are the "World's Best Cabin Crew" by Skytrax UK consecutively from 2001 till 2004 and "5-star Airline" also by Skytrax, UK.

That's the thing with Malaysian companies unfortunately - I know of a big local company - chock full of bright, committed engineers with amazing plans and ideas - but the old birds who make up the management felt threatened and block every attempt of the engineers to further enhance the services of this company. There is this mentality (Asian?) that if you're older the young Turks must never be seen as better than you. Consequently many of the young engineers left - to the old birds it matters not that the company is in tatters - as long as things are in place as *they* see it (i.e. ego comes first).

Too much company politics here in Malaysia, don't y'all think?

Company politics is everywhere around the globe. Controlling shareholders decide who should run the companies. If the appointed guys are professional in their management and are not under pressure from the controlling shareholders to deviate from this, the companies do well. Otherwise, the companies and the minority shareholders will bear the losses arising from the "siphoning" of corporate assets. Where these companies are government-owned the taxpayers are the losers.
