Bandar Seri Begawan - A Royal Brunei Airlines (RBA) flight from Manila was diverted to Kota Kinabalu yesterday after the pilot detected a technical fault with one of the aircraft's engines.

A press release from RBA said that flight B1682 was flying from Manila to Brunei when the pilot detected the trouble.

As a safety precaution, the pilot immediately requested priority landing at the nearest airport, which was Kota Kinabalu.

The flight landed without incident at 9.11am.

A spokesperson from RBA told The Brunei Times that there were 150 passengers on board.

The passengers were delayed in Kota Kinabalu for approximately three hours while the engine trouble was being fixed.

Arrangements were made to ensure passengers' needs were taken care of. the press release stressed.

They were subsequently flown back to Bandar Seri Begawan on the same day.

"Safety of its passengers and crew are of the utmost priority to Royal Brunei Airlines, and its flight crew are trained to take safety precautions when in any doubt," the press release said.

Meanwhile, AirAsia flight AK6212 bound for Brunei was turned back to Kota Kinabalu yesterday due to bad weather, according to a text message received by The Brunei Times from one of the 80 passengers aboard the diverted flight.

The plane left Kota Kinabalu at 6.15pm and was scheduled to land at 7pm in Brunei.

The message said that after two failed attempts to land, the captain of the plane decided to turn back.

The plane landed in Kota Kinabalu at 7.50pm.
