KC Sim 2 Report post Posted August 25, 2008 Changi Airport's 27-year-old Terminal One will be given a S$500m nip and tuck, botox and other cosmetic works. To be completed in 2011, it will : - Add a new departure kerbside canopy that covers two lanes of traffic and spans the entire facade of the terminal - Add a new "lantern" feature along the entire roofline of T1 and when lit at night, will be a focal feature for passengers travelling towards the terminal - Add two skylights over the departure hall and allow natural light to flood the entire area - Departure immigration clearance will now be centralised (taking up the area between the split immigration facilities currently in use) - An "Orchid Library" - a wall of orchids in bloom will rise from the arrival hall to a level of 5m above the departure hall - Glass lifts and water features will be added in the departure hall - Transit Hall will be extended by 35m to provide more space for a piazza - a space immediately in front of the departure immigration clearance area for passengers to enjoy airside view of the central apron, enjoy the new water feature and relax - More dining and retail space (not surprising) - A glass wall rising from the floor to the ceiling of the arrival hall for passengers to enjoy the tropical flora outside while clearing immigration - Sections of Piers C and D will be widened to provide more space for passengers outside the gate holdrooms - some gate holdrooms will also have increased seating capacity - New outdoor landcape areas with water features, themed planting and feature paving to provide more soft tropical foilage And there is of course the burning question . . . will the viewing mall end up like the ones in Terminals 2 and 3? According the CAAS' factsheet, "the public viewing gallery will be remodelled. The new viewing mall will provide for areas overlooking the Departure Transit Mall and aircraft parking bays. There will be new F&B opportunities at the viewing mall." So once again, a not-so-clear indication. But speaking to a CAAS official, I was told that there will be sections of the viewing mall where one could still go right up to the glass and not just have a view of people having a great view of planes (like in T2 and T3). So let's keep our fingers crossed and hope that this is true. As a result of the 35m extension of the airside facade towards parking bays C11 and D30, these two bays will be downgraded and be used by smaller aircraft - no types specified but I guess the B737s and smaller one are likely to be parked here.
