Delta Airlines B752 and Comair CRJ9 at New York on Jul 11th 2008, loss of separation on perpendicular runways due to go-around

By Simon Hradecky, created Saturday, Jul 12th 2008 06:14Z, last updated Saturday, Jul 12th 2008 06:17Z

A Delta Airlines Boeing 757-200, registration N713TW performing flight DL123 from Shannon (Ireland) to New York JFK,NY (USA), was approaching runway 22L at New York's John F. Kennedy Airport, when the crew decided to abort the landing and perform a go-around.

At the same time a Comair Canadair CRJ-900, flight OH1520 from New York JFK,NY to Boston,MA (USA), was cleared to takeoff from runway 13R.

The two aircraft lost separation, the lateral distance at the closest point was 0.55nm and vertical distance 600 feet, the FAA confirmed.

As a consequence out of the two recent incidents (see also Incident: Cayman B733 and LAN Chile B763 at New York on Jul 5th 2008, near midair collision? ) the FAA has immediately ordered to change procedures at JFK Airport disallowing simultaneous, independent operation on perpendicular runways. If a landing is imminent on the crossing runway, departures now need to be delayed.
