Airline Industry Sees Fewer Fatalities

KUALA LUMPUR, May 9 (Bernama) -- The number of global fatalities has declined amid higher accidents recorded particularly in Africa, Indonesia and Brazil last year.

Global fatalities declined 19 percent from 855 to 692, even as passenger numbers increased by six percent to over 2.2 billion passengers in 2007 with 100 accidents (57 jets, 43 turboprop) compared with 77 accidents in 2006 (46 jets, 31 turboprop), the International Air Transport Association (Iata) said in its 44th annual Safety Report released Friday.

Iata Director General/Chief Executive Officer, Giovanni Bisignani, said air travel was the safest mode of transportation.

"In the ten years from 1998, the accident rate was reduced by almost half --from 1.34 accidents per million flights to 0.75.

"And the number of fatalities dropped significantly in 2007," he said.

Bisignani said 48 percent of the year's accidents took place during landing, the majority of these involved runway excursions.

"Many of these accidents can be prevented by the initiation of a timely go-around," he said.

He said Iata, in cooperation with the Flight Safety Foundation, would develop a toolkit that would address the issues linked to runway safety enhancement, including the prevention of runway excursions.

Bisignani said almost half of the accidents were linked to a technical issue of which maintenance events contributed to almost 20 percent.

He said Iata would revise its safety strategy to encompass maintenance activities and safety management system implementation for maintenance organisations.

Meanwhile, Africa had the worst record at 4.09 hull-losses per million flights.

"While this is an improvement over last year, it is still six times less safe to fly in Africa than the rest of the world," he said.

It's also six times more exciting. Hewa Bora flies B727, L1011 and DC-8!
