Three Russians killed in Malaysian helicopter crash

KUALA LUMPUR : Three Russians were killed after their helicopter crashed while conducting a logging operation in the Malaysian state of Sarawak on Borneo island, police said on Sunday.

The pilot, co-pilot and the mechanic were the only three people on board the KAMOV KA-32 helicopter when it went down amid heavy rain on Saturday and burst into flames in the southern region of Kapit.

The three, who have yet to be identified, were working for local logging company Wong Tong Kuang, said Chief Inspector Steward Dawi from Sarawak police headquarters.

The crash "was witnessed by several of the workers at the logging camp. The helicopter was at the time lifting logs but due to uncertain circumstances the helicopter just swung down and caught on fire," he told AFP.

"It was bad weather at the time," Steward added.

The pilot's body was retrieved but a rescue team was working on Sunday to free the bodies of the other two from the wreckage, he said.

The crash was the third accident involving helicopters in Sarawak this year and the seventh aviation accident in the state in the last 18 months. - AFP/de

Looks like another one bought the farm.

Police Identify Three Russians Killed In Nanga Gaat Heli Crash

KAPIT, Sept 4 (Bernama) -- Police have identified the three Russians who were killed when their helicopter involved in heli logging operation crashed at Camp B of the Nanga Gaat Timber camp in Baleh near here at about 3pm Saturday.

A spokesman of the Kapit police operations room said the three were pilot Anatoli Seleznev, 49; co-pilot Andrei Gritsenko, 26; and flight engineer Istomin Alexey, 38.

The bodies of Gritsenko and Alexey were removed from the wreckage at 2pm and 3pm by the police and camp workers.

The body of Anatoli was removed by camp timber workers at 5pm Saturday.

All the remains are now at the Nanga Gaat camp, about three hours' boat ride from here.

Kapit OCPD DSP Johar Ahmad, who flew into the area for search and rescue operations Sunday morning, was forced by heavy rain to land at Sungai Melatai in Sungai Gaat and is only expected to arrive here Monday.

Meanwhile, the spokesman said arangements had been made for a Royal Malaysian Air Force Nuri helicopter to fly to the camp Monday to bring the bodies to the Kapit General Hospital for a post-mortem.

The three Russsians and their Kamov-32 RA 31602 helicopter were engaged by a contractor, Hua Xin Heli Harvesting Sdn Bhd, to winch fallen logs to lorries waiting on the road.

They were reported to be working in very bad weather conditions when the accident occurred.

The Nanga Gaat camp belongs to the WTK Group, a Sibu-based local conglomerate, and the camp is about three hours' journey by longboat from here.

However, to reach the crash site, one has to travel another five hours on four-wheel drive through 168km of logging road.
