Recommended Posts

MULTIMEDIA Development Corporation (MDeC) chief executive officer Badlisham Ghazali(pic) has resigned and will be taking over as managing director of Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB), which has been facing public scrutiny over the escalating costs and delayed opening of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2).

The contract of current MAHB managing director Bashir Ahmad Abdul Majid, who has been heading the company since 2003, expires tomorrow (June 6). The company is expected to issue a statement to Bursa Malaysia by 5pm today.

MAHB, which manages nearly all airports in Malaysia, has 10 subsidiaries under it. It is 40.2% owned by Khazanah Nasional Bhd, the Malaysian Government’s investment arm which operates under the Ministry of Finance.

Is Bashir destined to become MAS CEO since MASEU wanted someone within MAS as he was with MAS before?

New era for MAHB

PASSING THE BATON: Badlisham to take over as managing director effective June 23

MALAYSIA Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) will mark the end of an era and a new beginning when managing director Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad Abdul Majid passes the baton to Multimedia Development Corp head honcho Datuk Badlisham Ghazali.Badlisham will come on board as the new managing director effective June 23, as Bashir takes a bow after leading MAHB for 11 years.

Bashir, who had last year indicated his wish for someone to replace him, is not leaving MAHB for good, though. He will stay on as adviser on the request of the board, due to his vast experience in the industry.

“The board of MAHB wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to Tan Sri Bashir, whose leadership had achieved stellar performances for the company,” MAHB said in a statement yesterday.

MAHB said Bashir’s stewardship underpinned the implementation of six strategic pillars that transformed the company.

They are the review of the organisational structure, inculcating a culture of high performance, effective stakeholder management, staff well-being and engagement, corporate governance and adapting to industry changes.

“All these, together with the restructuring exercise in 2009, had enabled MAHB to become financially strong, with an ‘AAA’ rating from RAM Ratings,” MAHB said, adding that profits have benefited shareholders as well as staff.

Bashir has also been instrumental in leading the team towards the completion and successful opening of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (klia2).

MAHB said until Badlisham steps in, the managing director duties will be covered by the executive committee under the supervision of the board.

Coming from an information technology industry, Badlisham has led the development of the National ICT Initiatives.

Meanwhile, AirAsia Group founder and chairman Tan Sri Tony Fernandes paid tribute to Bashir for helping AirAsia grow and for the setting-up of the Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT).

“We have been very good friends. He and I drove around the airport (Kuala Lumpur International Airport) to look for a site for the LCCT when he told us that Subang would not work for us.

“He is the father of LCCT. We disagreed on the pricing of the passenger service charge (PSC). With the government’s help, it went down from RM45 to RM25 at LCCT,” Fernandes told Business Times.

Although things seemed to turn sour between Fernandes and Bashir in recent years, especially on klia2, Fernandes said it does not alter their long-term friendship.

“No hard feelings. We had to do our job and we will fight for what we think is right,” he said, adding that the disagreement over the new terminal is nothing personal.

As the airport and airlines need each other to ensure the successful growth of the country’s aviation industry, Fernandes looks forward to new ties with MAHB under Badlisham.

“We hope it will be a new beginning with MAHB,” he said, adding that some of the issues at klia2 that he will bring before Badlisham are the check-in system and ensuring that the PSC remains low.

“We need our own check-in system because that gives us more ability to innovate. We also need to work on a joint-marketing package to bring more people to Malaysia.”

AirAsia is using the Sita check-in system at klia2 instead of its own system, Navitaire.

I think two previous weaknesses were mentioned - speed (SITA is slowing down check-ins) and flexibility.

Some Mwings members also mentioned that SITA kiosks cannot print luggage tags.

Isn't Bashir too old? Gosh. They should look for a young talent like Azran or Aireen to become the new CEO.
