Qantas names new uniform designer

Item by australianaviation.com.au at 3:32 pm, Thursday May 31 2012

Qantas staff will be getting some new threads after the airline chose Australian designer Martin Grant to refashion its uniforms.

The new uniforms are expected to be ready by 2014 and will replace the existing design by Peter Morrissey, which has been in use since 2003. The Qantas uniform has been redesigned nine times since 1959.

Qantas said Grant was chosen after a rigorous selection process. Born in Melbourne, Grant launched his first fashion line in 1982 and is “internationally recognized for his bespoke tailoring, simplicity of lines and timeless silhouettes,” the airline said in a statement.

“Martin’s work reflects modern and contemporary designs and we were extremely impresses with his appreciation for the Qantas brand and his enthusiasm to design the next instalment of the Qantas uniform,” Qantas CEO Alan Joyce added.

Grant said he was honoured to take on the task.

“As an Australian, I’m proud to be working with such an iconic Australian brand,” the Paris-based designer said. “It will be wonderful to see the Qantas teams wearing my design across Australia and in cities all over the world.”

Qantas said Grant will begin developing design concepts with a “uniform panel” made up of employees from across the airline. The panel will provide feedback on look, wear and comfort.

Qantas shows off new crew uniforms

By australianaviation.com.au | 16 April 2013 Tuesday | 12:21 pm

Qantas has unveiled its new uniforms to be worn by 12,600 staff from early 2014, designed by Paris-based Australian Martin Grant.

Thirty-five different garments will be produced, featuring French navy suits and white shirts, and featuring Qantas red “variations” of ruby red and fuchsia pink, recreating, Qantas says, “the idea of the Qantas triangle, across tops and dresses for women and on ties for men”.

The airline says some 400,000 garments will be made, using around 350,000 metres of fabric.

The uniforms will be worn by staff at 85 locations in 21 countries. Various colour combinations are to denote seniority levels. The uniforms were developed with input from the Qantas Uniform Panel, comprising 12 representatives of each Qantas ‘customer-facing’ department, including cabin crew and ground staff.

The white inside paired with jacket is not too bad...but the pink sleeve...a bit futuristic ala star trek...funny how the new CX adopted similar futuristic outlook as well...imagine sarong kebaya with edges...hahaha!

IMO, the female uniform looks good, but it doesn't scream Australia or the cabin crew could be easily mistaken as a passenger. It's definitely more fashionable, but there's nothing special. I prefer Peter Morrissey's uniform.
