Accident: Sriwijaya B733 at Yogyakarta on Dec 20th 2011, runway excursion

Recommended Posts

A Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-300, registration PK-CKM performing flight SJ-230 from Jakarta to Yogyakarta (Indonesia) with 131 passengers, veered left off runway 09 while landing in strong rain at 17:35L (10:35Z) and came to a stop on soft ground about 25 meters past and left of the runway end with the right main gear and the nose gear collapsed. The aircraft was evacuated, two passengers received injuries during the evacuation and were taken to a hospital.

Observers on the ground reported the aircraft landed at a higher than normal speed and veered off the runway, while still slowing down a number of parts of the aircraft were already left behind.

The aircraft had aborted the approach to Yogyakarta due to weather conditions (heavy rain and insufficient visibility of less than 500 meters) and diverted to Solo, however, again could not land in Solo due to weather and diverted to Surabaya, where the aircraft refueled. The aircraft subsequently departed for Yogyakarta where weather was reported sufficiently improved so that the crew attempted the landing.

The airline reported the aircraft's brakes were ineffective due to the wet runway. The aircraft overran the end of the runway and came to a stop in grass about 60 meters past the runway end. The nose gear collapsed, the aircraft also received damage to the underside of the fuselage. Five passengers received injuries, mainly shock and abrasions.

Yogyakarta's runway 09/27 is 2200 meters/7200 feet long.

No weather data are available.
