Singapore Airlines A380 to fly Singapore - Frankfurt - New York

Recommended Posts

19 September 2011 - Singapore Airlines will fly the world’s largest aircraft, the Airbus A380, on the Singapore – Frankfurt – New York route from 15 January 2012.

Frankfurt and New York will be Singapore Airlines’ ninth and tenth destinations to receive the superjumbo. New York will also be the second point in North America to be added to the list. The Singapore Airlines A380 has proven exceptionally popular with customers, with strong loads on all routes it serves. Systemwide, more than 5.6 million customers have flown on the Airline’s A380s since the inaugural flight in October 2007 to Sydney.

The daily A380 flights will replace an existing daily Boeing 747-400 service to New York’s JFK Airport via Frankfurt, representing a daily increase of 25% in seat capacity.

“The introduction of the A380 to Frankfurt and New York is another milestone for Singapore Airlines. For the United States, our customers will be able to enjoy the latest cabin products on all routes, in addition to having the A380 serving both east and west coasts,” said Mr Mak Swee Wah, Singapore Airlines’ Executive Vice President Commercial.

“For Germany, it will also mean offering our customers the latest cabin products on both of our daily Frankfurt flights as well as our daily Munich flights.”

Exclusively available on the A380 are the Singapore Airlines Suites. Each Suite offers customers a high level of privacy in an exclusive cabin in the sky, featuring a sliding door and adjustable roller blinds. Each Suite is furnished with a luxurious and fully adjustable leather seat, upholstered by world-renowned Poltrona Frau, and a full-sized bed. For entertainment, customers can enjoy crystal-clear images on a sleek 23-inch high-resolution LCD monitor, mounted on the wall in each Suite.

The Singapore Airlines A380 Business Class is also in a league of its own. Measuring 86 centimetres (34 inches) in width, the Business Class seat is the widest in its class and each has direct access to the aisle. Each seat can be converted into a comfortable wide bed, simply by folding down the seat back.

Singapore Airlines’ new Economy Class seat offers customers unprecedented comfort and space. The ergonomically designed seat not only maximises knee and legroom, it also boasts intelligent features such as a non-intrusive reading light and height-adjustable leather headrests with side panels.

Customers across all three classes can enjoy a wide range of the latest movies, TV programmes and a library of CDs on KrisWorld, Singapore Airlines’ award-winning inflight entertainment system. Come mealtime, delectable inflight meals, designed exclusively by world-class chefs like Suzanne Goin from the United States, Zhu Jun from China and Sam Leong from Singapore, are served and presented on exclusive Givenchy-designed serviceware.

Singapore Airlines currently has 13 A380s in service and a further six on firm order.

I knew something like this would come. They first launched A380 on SIN - NRT - LAX. Only they couldn't make it on non stop flights because all the non stop flights to USA are business class.

That is astute product positioning - even their A345 has something that the A380 cannot offer.

The business pax can choose between speed (non-stop) and relaxed cruising (no pesky coach class pax) of the A345 or the prestige and super luxury of the A380. That way, they are covering more of the market.

And even though the SIA A380s compete with Lufthansa's A380s on the Frankfurt-Singapore route, one should note that SIA's A380s have Business Class seats that convert into a fully-flat bed while Lufthansa's A380 Business Class seats are inclined!

Frankly, I do not understand why Lufthansa did not fit subsequent A380s with the fully-flat bed that have already been earmarked for their B747-8 Intercontinentals.

The non-stop A345 service between Singapore and Newark definitely have their loyal core of business travellers and I don't think there is any danger of these passengers abandoning the A345 in significant numbers. Having flown SIA's A345 nonstop between Singapore and Los Angeles and on Thai's A345 non-stop between Bangkok and JFK, I personally am a big fan of such ultra-longhaul nonstop flights - except that SIA's A345s are in exclusively Business Class configuration.
