Bomb scare on Melbourne-bound flight

Thomas Hunter

August 20, 2009 - 9:45AM .

A bomb scare on a Melbourne-bound Singapore Airlines flight rattled passengers this morning.

The flight, with 198 passengers and 20 crew, was alerted to a bomb threat received in a call centre at Mumbai, India, after the plane had taken off from Singapore, an airline spokeswoman told The Age.

Crew members reportedly ordered passengers to the rear of the plane while they inspected hand luggage towards the front of the airliner.

The crew alerted passengers to the potential threat.

"Once we were sure the bomb did not exist, we told passengers the flight was under threat, but by that stage we were quite sure it was a hoax," the airline spokeswoman said.

"With passengers and crew all safely in Melbourne we checked the plane thoroughly and haven't found anything."

"Obviously security is of the utmost concern to us. We took the threat very seriously and involved all the appropriate authorities who are now investigating the matter."

"We have handed the tape of the call over to the AFP."

The airline is unsure where the call originated.

A spokesman for the Australian Federal Police said officers stationed at Tullamarine were notified of the threat at 2.15am.

"An assessment of the threat was conducted," he said, "and the aircraft continued its normal flight to Melbourne where it was ascertained to be a hoax threat."

I saw a SQ B777-300 (non-ER) on the way to work this morning around 8:40 and she was coming to land. It is quite likely this bird is the one involved in this incident.
