Ho Chi Minh City Airport catches fire

What a pity. This is actually the old terminal. The new terminal houses international flights, and is unaffected.

10:39' 27/10/2008 (GMT+7)

VietNamNet Bridge – A domestic terminal of the Tan Son Nhat Airport suddenly caught fire at 2:45 a.m. Monday morning, causing a series of flights to be delayed.

The fire occurred next to the terminal’s restaurant. Approximately 30 fire trucks were rushed to the airport to put out the fire. Three hours later, the fire was under control; however, witnesses said that columns of smoke were still visible on the roof of the terminal.

At about 6:00 a.m., all passengers of local flights were transferred to the international terminal. Firefighters said they have completely extinguished the fire and the airport was able to resume its normal activities by 9:00 a.m. that morning.

There have not been any reports on how much damage the fire has caused. The Chief of the Southern Airport Authority, Tran Thuy Minh, said that no casualties were reported in the fire.

The cause of the fire has not yet been reported.

The domestic terminal will shut down for 24 hours for repairs, and passengers of local flights will board at the international terminal, the chief said.

According to head of the Southern Airport Authority office, Nguyen Thi Anh Dao, the airport authority is entitled to announce a temporary shut-down of the airport within 24 hours, in line with Vietnam aviation laws. Further instructions belong to the chief of Vietnam Civil Aviation Agency.

She also revealed that the chief is on the way from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City to undertake the consequences of the fire.

According Mai, it was caused in the First-floor Restaurant and closed down the Lounge and boarding-area...according her, most domestic flights departures back to original Terminal.

Mizi,

Tan Son Nhat was USAF/VNAF base before; this Terminal was built after 1975 and 'shows' typical 'Russian' architecture. (see Ryan's trippie)

We'll see if we've time next week for some shots :pardon:
