Milford Sound - airport, fiord, et al.

Recommended Posts

Milford Sound airport MFN, but it is closed today 080808 due to unfavourable winds, even though the sky is blue. Ah well, sorry, no planes, since they mainly come from Queenstown, Te Anau and Wanaka. None is based here.

Main terminal and carpark.

Runway 29/11, at the far end.

For MFN location, pls click HERE.

Anyway the fiord is great, a bit cold though. Another NZ icon, Mitre Peak - 1,700m - dominates. :)

Along the 120-km scenic (and sometimes hazardous during winter - see current conditions HERE) Te Anau to Milford Sound road, Homer Tunnel lies some 20km before Milford Sound. See location HERE.

At 940m above sea level, and in winter, an area with avalanche risks, giant alpine parrots loiter around waiting for handouts.

In sub-zero temperature, humans try to befriend them. But pls do not feed them anything since their system cannot handle human foods.

Kea is now a rare species, but an intelligent bird.

Entrance to tunnel, opened in 1953 after 20 yrs of hacking through granite.

One-lane passage inside the tunnel, 1.2km long, with a down gradient of 1:10, meaning the other side is 120m lower than the opening we just passed.

Needless to say, the view on the other side is breath-taking.

Winter is beautiful and I'm sure your missus would love it, but at the risk of bad weather spoiling your trip. And NZ winter weather is not exactly friendly. We were lucky to have hit a narrow window of wonderful weather. A week earlier or a week later, our travel plan would have been in chaos! :)

Very nice scenery there and the friendly parrot :)

The Kea is actually the world's only Alpine parrot. And yes, they are friendly and inquisitive.
