  1. There is just so many things wrong with FY for east msia ops made worse with them just having 1 aircraft based in BKI.
    1. Many locals are not aware there is such an airline especially in places like Miri, Tawau, Sandakan and Lahad Datu. Simple marketing like state newspaper ads are not being done. Firefly is relying on Facebook and Instagram and maybe some roadshow when most of the locals there are not bothered to use those. Head into any kopitiam in sandakan they'll only recognize Airasia and MAS nothing else.
    2. Timeslot FY schedules is undesirable by locals. Only reason people may take is the tinsy tiny sales given or very small amount are casual people who do not mind the timing.
    3. Them taking over MH's schedule but then putting it at an even worse timing than before just irks the regular flyers back then.

These issues combined you have very low loads onboard consistently with little to no marketing actually reaching folks. Then when loads are low as an LCC it will just outright cancel back to back and combining them. This is just going to deter people from ever considering flying with them.

Parent company also has not allocated sufficient funds for *s#1t happens* scenario like the Max delivery timeline being a total run off. The moment the 1st delay has occurred that effects any transfer of aircraft there's no point to argue with lessors for cheap deals anymore and to get whatever 737ng there is out there and stop waiting for MH to give some.

It may not be a bad idea to replace the AB A332s with WY A333s. That will deliver the capacity boost that MH needs. Since factory fresh deliveries are very slow, they will need to work the fleet harder and not have them on the ground for so long.

Doubt MH is willing to fiddle around a diff engine OEM. Only reason also the previous CEO took the 6 A332 were the lease rates were bottom barrel very cheap in cost on top of the PW4170 engines out of the box. Korean Air and Asiana are planning to offload some PW A333s this year end perhaps better to aim for those.

The delay in aircraft deliveries has also stunted FY's jet fleet cause it can't take any existing 737-800 from MH. It pretty much an airline flapping around with nothing to go at. Still 5 aircraft today from the original supposed 8 aircrafts.

If the board and Khazanah were efficient to abrupt changes in the environment they would've already approved some funding from the net profit to secure second hand B737-800s out there instead of fully storing it in a piggybank. Instead we now have a company group that behaves an auntie in a road street market haggling at fruit stall sellers for unreasonable bargain when other people in the vicinity can just outright pay for it.

  3. MAG growth strategy on track

    Quote

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Aviation Group Bhd (MAG), the parent company of national carrier Malaysia Airlines Bhd, is likely to take delivery of six new aircraft this year after experiencing much delay from aircraft manufacturers.

MAG chief executive officer of airlines Ahmad Luqman Mohd Azmi told StarBiz that it expects to receive three wide-body Airbus A330neo by the third quarter of the year, while it will be getting three narrow-body Boeing 737-MAX 8 aircraft sometime this year.

“We have an order of 25 737-MAX 8 aircraft and we are expecting three deliveries this year.

“The rest, which is 22 of these aircraft, will be delivered in stages until 2026,” he said.

    + 3 B38M + 3 A339.

Again with the current unreliability given by Boeing and Airbus in supplying delivery timeline, It is better to start hunting for few second hand aircrafts.

The EU is suing EU airlines for greenwashing soon. Lets hope MAVCOM and CAAM are watching this move closely. TF may just be paying lip service to sustainability while boosting his company's bottom line.

The problem the finance and corporate sector in most of Asean have been pushing this gimmick for improved ratings. Not only tied to the aviation industry its also in the private sector, IT and engineering industry and even our government.

Oh my gosh, and we're anticipating the Chinese labour day holiday rush over next few days/weeks 🤦‍♂️

Understand they are also doing direct charters into TWU as well 😑

Am already seeing some TWU bound flights cancelled and diverted meanwhile some SDK ones have started to cancel out tomorrow. BKI does not seem to be affected for now.

  6. Indonesia's Ruang volcano erupts again, alert status at highest

    Quote

JAKARTA, April 30 (Reuters) - Indonesia's Ruang volcano off the island of Sulawesi erupted on Tuesday, spewing ash and lava, after an eruption earlier this month led to hundreds of evacuations and an airport closure.

The country's Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) raised the alert level to the highest following the morning eruption, urging residents not to get near the volcano, according to its website.

Another potential disruption. Those traveling to east Msia soon should plan ahead.

If they go for the max 10 then I wonder if they will fit a better cabin and use them on longer routes?

Afaik they did ordered lie flat seats but only for 10 narrowbody aircraft. Just that nobody knows whats the status of the seat order contract.

But again end of last year the RFP was for 35 narrowbody and 10 widebody. Now on the article it seems the narrowbody got trimmed to just 25. It may be them deferring the remaining 10 to after.

This "senior aviation journalist"  never usually has any breaking news stories or scoops or appears to ask challenging questions. Maybe Im being unfair but having seen their online content its pretty weak.

News didnt even came out from aviation based news article. So expect their journalist to know airbus 787 and Boeing 350-1000ER as the go to lol.

  9. MAG realigning future network, to issue RFP for 25 planes in 2Q24

    Quote

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) plans to issue a request for proposal (RFP) for its second batch of 25 single-aisle planes in the second quarter of 2024 as the group reviews its network again due to global external changes.

The RFP was supposed to be issued in the first quarter.

Group managing director Datuk Captain Izham Ismail said the RFP announcement would be made in due time and did not disclose the aircraft type.

Izham also said MAG expects to receive the first Airbus A330neo (new engine option) it ordered in 2022 in the third quarter of this year and three A350s for the its widebody fleet.

He said the 20 A330neo planes are replacements while MAG has an option for another 20 widebody planes for future expansion.

"We'll make both announcements (on narrowbody and widebody aircraft plans) together," he added.

Am not sure where he is going to pluck 3 more used a350s out there cause there is currently none only thing i can see is them getting lessor unit directly from airbus which means they will only enter in at best Q1 2027.

Doesn't it also affect the airways of the South China Sea? Anyway, FR24 seems to be showing quite a bit of traffic now,

Intensity of so2 intensity is depleting so much more flight dispension can be offerred. As a result of the ash cloud getting less intense and thinning unlike yesterday, more various off track and more altitude assignments can be use now. Should expect moderate service recovery for Sabah by tomorrow evening.

Looks like its heading towards us :(
Haze was bad yesterday until the evening storm. Wonder if it will affect KL/Singapore?

From the looks of it it may be heading more towards vietnam and maybe pahang but before reaching land the so2 concentration wouldve depleted quite a lot so not much a hazard by then.

  12. High SO2 concentration now over at South China Sea but will gradually be weaken starting tonight and by the time it reaches Vietnam in Sunday it should not impact flights over that region. Sabah and Sarawak as of now is almost completely covered in it.

KCH, BTU, SBW has started recovery attempts with most flights tracking more from the south using Jakarta and Singapore FIR.

MYY, BWN, BKI, SDK, TWU severe restrictions still around. Limited flights crossing south china sea with limited altitude clearance of less than 35000feet and below plus limited corridor in amount of traffic allowed. Expect more flights restoration by tomorrow evening.

Flights operated by MASwings remains completely unaffected as their ATR-72 can cruise lower height without any fuel penalty.

BKI KCH widebody rescue can expect MH to only supply 1-2 dedicated aircraft back to back. OD and AK the same. Expect teething problems in clearing stranded backlog to persist down to next week.

I see MH2668 KUL-SDK being operated by an A330 later today

OD1002 KUL-BKI is on its way now with an A330, as will MH2614, 2616, 2638 and  2640 later in the day

That sdk flight is likely an flightradar24 error its been that way for months. BKI also.

Are BI’s plane built differently? They seem to have somewhat normal operations. 🤣

We have relatively decent drainage system but sometimes it does get overwhelmed. But developers are eyeing a few of those retaining ponds for development. So who knows in the future.

And I am also surprised that some people don’t understand why SMART tunnel is closed during heavy downpours and blame poor planning when the tunnel floods 🤣

CX A359 and Hong Kong A330 just flew right on top of moutn kinabalu at 39000feet hours ago heading north while the rest skiddled out the borders. Sometimes special dispension given by their respective flight ops. As for BI saw one cruising at 18000feet only.

Another look seems almost easily 70% of the pax in BKI KCH do not have travel insurance lol.

That and also this was once in a century storm. Not saying that they shouldn't invest in proper drainage system, but countries do not usually build drainage to handle a year's worth of rain in 24 hours. If KL had 140+mm (5+ inches) in 24 hours, it'd overwhelm our drainage system too but of course it wouldn't be as bad as what Dubai experienced, but good luck to Sri Muda or Puchong.

Are there still a lot of post-raya demand? I still see MH 7xxx series flying around so I assume there will be some backlog. What does black/blue box on your map indicates?

Yes post raya traffic still around suppose down to end of this week. Black means certain restriction in place related to the eruption as for blue i have no idea. It seems Sarawak condition is improving but not Sabah for now. At least for KL if it is flooded water will recede within few hours. For Dubai i heard its been 24hours and not much condition has improved.

levated SO2 readings were recorded in Tawau and its raining hours ago have yet to see MET issuing out notices for public to stay indoor during rain. Forecast indicates it is moving slightly northwest.

  17. If we rewind this back to 14 years ago with a disruption like this. Would probably see MH sending in 2 B747-400 for KCH  BKI back to back to clear up the backlog up to late night. For now 1-2 A330s should be call up on standby but will effect domino effects on some of the international flights.
