  1. Oddly enough, it's still listed as A333 in the GDS even though the A388 already flew to Australia. Those few pax on Row 1 and 2 are in for a surprise if they allow them to keep their seats ;)

Tourism Australia published stats on Malaysian tourists to Oz (2011-2015). For 2015, D7 and MH respectively carried 47% and 33% of Malaysian tourists to Australia (SQ was only 5%).

    More info here.

For the period of 3/2016-2/2017, there were a total of 385,300 Malaysian (based on country of residence) visitors to Australia, up from 345,700 the same period a year before.

  2.

UA could pay Dr Dao for $1b for all the people could care but it won't earn the sympathy from many enraged people to fly with UA at this time. If you think UA's action was justified, continue to fly with UA and get ready to be booted with busted face and injury.

I have never said UA's action was justified.

But having that said, a boycott wouldn't work. I don't fly UA that much (only 1 flight in 2016), but if UA released a $500 SFO-HKG RT Polaris fare, you bet I'll be the first one to jump on it. Look how well MH is doing in China now? All this will be forgotten in a few weeks.

I do recall one MW member telling me that she'll boycott QR because they didn't honor her HKT-KUL fare, but she's happily flying QR around the world now :p

  3.

Somehow this has to be resolved else it's leading toward discrimination. It's not an opened bidding.

If US has similar laws to EC261, I'll be rich ;)

It's easy. UA has a ceiling of $800 (from what I read and sounds reasonable). Anything above that requires a supervisor approval. Remove that restriction, there'll be takers. $1,000? No. OK, how about $1,500? No. OK how about....$5,000? Someone will budge. There's a price for everyone, just that everyone in that plane was higher than $800 for a 22-hour delay. Is $5k per pax better than this PR disaster and pending lawsuit/settlement?

Or the government could set a floor price for IDB (it's still too low since the incentive of them overselling is greater than the cost). There are too many instances where IDB pax aren't informed of their rights properly by the agents and processed as VDB (I don't know if agents are encouraged to do that because of IDB repercussions etc.).

But knowing US, this will all go away in a few weeks and it's back to business as usual. And the US3 will begin to lobby for more deregulations/incentives and more regulations to keep the ME3 at bay.

  4. Meaning MH's product to HKG will now be better than KA

MH is now back to using the 330 for HKG

Yes and they are marketing it as such "only flat beds between KUL and HKG". And I think they are considering of upgauging a second flight to the 333 as well.

OT: The 9AM-ish DPS flight will be upgauged to the A333 next month.

  5. Worst of all, the movie they chose to play on the plane was Manchester by the Sea...

    Fake news.

And airlines shouldn't play this movie. I watched this movie from HKG to LAX at the beginning of my flight and I still haven't finished the movie when we reached the Californian Coast. It's such a long movie and make sure the sun is still shining, birds chirping, flowers blooming when you leave the theater/plane. Otherwise you might just drain a vein and go into a deep sleep.

  6. United stocks just went plummet by 900million.

Just me being pedantic. Their market cap value dropped ~$900MM, not stocks.

According to United the passenger was belligerent and "he raised his voice and refused to comply with crew member instructions." Which is why the airport security team was called.

A new video surfaced and it didn't show him to be belligerent/confrontational at all (the conversation between him and the Chicago airport security (whatever that's called) before he was dragged out of his seat). Munoz read what the GA wrote on the passenger's PNR without verifying the agent's claim.

It appears now that the GA embellished some details into the PNR (which is not unheard of), but there are so many videos that it's hard to prove the GA's and security personnel's claims.

  7.

do they really have a choice? but having said that, A321 is not that bad considering it has 3 lavs for Y pax, from my personal experience flying VN to NRT.

No. It's not bad flying 5-6 hours on an A321. But the problem is what's inside the plane. The 320s aren't fitted the same as KA's 330 (and not to mention, CX 33E/K and 77W).

  8. Cathay Dragon from July 2017 to October 2017 is increasing Hong Kong Penang flights, based on comparison with same period in 2016. The airline from 02JUL17 to 26OCT17 will introduce 12th weekly flight, operated by Airbus A320 aircraft.

    See http://www.routesonline.com/news/38/airlineroute/272245/cathay-dragon-increases-s17-penang-flights-/

For those who said KA is an improvement/not a downgrade from CX, we might see KA 320/321 paying KUL a visit soon. 5 times a day on those narrow body or getting subbed for a 1-clas 320. CX group loves frequency more than capacity.

Correct me if I am wrong, but is this the first regularly scheduled KA 320/321 into PEN?

  9. Errr...you do realise SBW is hardly the centre of the universe to be prepped up for all eventualities...and stuff do cost more than a dime.

BWN - a far bigger airport was paralysed for much more when a similar incident happened with that wayward AK plane...

But I agree with the general view that if MH could be less cost conscious and deploy all four slides, it would have received accolades from pax having a much more fun time sliding down the rear slides at a steeper gradient...and the grounds must be soft anyway with all the torrential downpour, so the pax would not feel anything more than a teeny weeny pin prick when they eventually land off the end of the slide...

That's what buffaloes are for. They can be led into the airfield and tow the plane away (just like how they used to irrigate the paddy fields).

I say deploy the rear slides so I can get a better bang for my buck when sliding down those slides :D I get a more exhilarating ride instead of one that's close to ground at a smaller angle.

  10. not sure if its a bug, but MH fares also inconsistent..

eg: if select one way, KUL-KBR is RM9x++

but if select round trip, KUL-KBR is RM2xx++, while the return trip is another RM2xx (total RM5xx)

Not a bug. I didn't research into this, but it's common for airlines to have different fares for one way and roundtrip. Sometimes the roundtrip can be more or less than two one ways (more when minimum stay is not met - this is mainly targeted to business travelers).

  11.

i believe it's more akin to Silk Air for SQ, not LCC but main service to secondary routes and of course tone down frills....no IFE, snacks rather than full course meals etc....in any event, it's at par with MH mainline service..so im not complaining.....

Add no lounge access (except for TG ROP members), no business class, and possibly no interlining besides TG. It not on par with MH at all. Despite what most people here think, MH is not even close to the LCC level.

To my knowledge, MH still offers (which some full-service carriers doesn't even offer):

    - complimentary meals and drinks even on short hops

    - complimentary checked bags

    - baggage interlining with OW partners and sometimes with others

    - complimentary seat assignments (coming soon)

  12. I dont know if MH doesn't care a hood for on time departure or something else, but you're so right the inbound and subsequently outbound flight from kul/akl is never ever on time. Delay delay delay. Saw 9M MTH at air new Zealand hanger.took a picture.

ps: How do I upload pix here?

It'd be naive to think that MH doesn't care about on time performance. I've flown on a few MH flights within the past few years and I find that their OTP is pretty good. I've only experienced two delays with them - 1 was due to thunderstorm at KUL where my inbound was diverted to JHB and another was MH 132 which was thankfully only delayed by 1.5 hours (but then again it was 00:55 to 02:30).

I've flown in and out of KUL a lot and noticed that MH flights generally depart on time. The worst OTP airline based on my limited KUL FIDS observation is OD.

  13. Wasn't on this flight, but I flew MH 132 recently and this flight has abysmal on time performance. It's scheduled as a 75-minute turnaround at AKL but it almost always never leaves on time at KUL (as MH133) and subsequently AKL (as MH 132).

I don't know if they are too optimistic about their KUL-AKL block time, KUL ground delays (MH 130 KUL-AKL has shody OTP as well but not as bad as MH 132), or if they are delaying the planes for transfer passengers. Doesn't help that the AKL lounge will close if MH 132 is severely delayed (>1h).

  14. US to ban laptops and tablets on flights from eight countries

    http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-39333424

    Another chaos at airport.

Something's not right with this list/ban especially for AUH - it's a pre-clearance airport and that means it must meet US standards for security screening. And haven't potential terrorist heard of connecting flights?

But somehow, UK list's does not include Abu Dhabi, Doha and Dubai.

Of course not. QR holds 20% of IAG and EK is one of the biggest non-EU carriers into the UK. Imagine how much money they'll lose from business travelers and tourists if they implement this ban for EK/QR/EY.

  15. 3 more Chinese routes loaded into the GDS. Per routesonline, the following flights have been added:

eff 13JUN17 Kuala Lumpur – Nanjing 3 weekly

    MH532 KUL1705 – 2230NKG 738 247
    MH533 NKG2335 – 0520+1KUL 738 247

eff 20JUN17 Kuala Lumpur – Wuhan 3 weekly
    MH515 KUL1835 – 0005+1WUH 738 246
    MH516 WUH0105 – 0635KUL 738 357

eff 26JUN17 Kuala Lumpur – Fuzhou 3 weekly
    MH358 KUL1005 – 1445FOC 738 135
    MH359 FOC1545 – 2040KUL 738 135

Am I the only one who is OCD on how MH numbers its flights? Do they just spin the wheel and see what number it lands on? :p Isn't China/Taiwan in the MH3xx series?

  16. Ok that's good to know. Is it true that Malaysia airlines will give you invitation to plaza premium lounge by default at Hong Kong instead of one world lounge?

MH will give you the lounge invitation to the lounge they are contracted to. But your J boarding pass will get you into either the QF or CX lounges. HKG is one of the few airports where they have really remarkable lounges since both QF and CX have top-notch lounge facilities. I like the QF lounge as well as the CX Pier J lounge the most.

  17. Anyone manage to redeem emirates business class ticket? How to do it? I called the call centre and they seen like don't know how to do it.

It's best if you look up for availability first and then feed agents the flight you want. And some (most?) English calls are routed to Fiji call center (FCC from now on). They know how to make revenue bookings and even that it's OK. If you want a Malaysian agent who knows MH system at the back of their hand, sila tekan 1 until Bahasa Melayu, 3 for Mandarin, 4 for Tamil, and 5 for Cantonese, whichever you are fluent in.

  18. A few years back MYR to EUR conversion rates is exactly where it is right now (4.5-4.6 level) so I don't actually see how you come to the 3/4 conclusion.

It was only briefly during Greek crisis in 2015 and a few years during USD 100 oil price that MYR traded at below 4.00 for EUR (unless you go wayyyyy back of course)

But then again I don't think inter company repatriation of money works by simple exchange rates calculation

Also I agree with Jani that supposedly weak ringgit should be boon for Europeans since things should be cheaper..

However the truth on the ground is that they're still reeling from the impact of the previous and recent economic crisis

    EUR:MYR has been around 4.00 since 2012 and for about 12-months between 2013 and 2014, it was 4.5-ish (5-year low was 3.807 and 5-year high was 5.019). Now it's 4.72.

LH introduced nonstop services to KUL March 2015 (along with AF, but maybe a year before LH). EUR:MYR then was 4.00-ish. LH pulled out of KUL March 2016, EUR:MYR was 4.50-ish. However, I don't believe the decision to pull out happened in March 2016, but maybe sometime late 2015 and EUR:MYR was around 5.00.

Let's assume they expect to generate $1 million MYR in revenue a month for ex-MY operations. In March 2015, they can repatriate back €250k. In Nov. 2015, the can only repatriate back €200k - that's a loss of €50k (or 20%)! My math was a little off earlier because I was using USD in reference to jani, but EUR depreciated (and is still depreciating) against USD as well.

True that company repatriation doesn't work by simple exchange rate calculation, but it's useful to see that they aren't getting that much revenue from MY operations with the falling MYR.

Good point. But what could also happen is that they just turn that money around for KUL/Malaysia ops, without having to exchange it again.

Anyway, it is basic (although perhaps purely theoretical) economics that a cheaper exchange rate should drive more money to said country.

Same reason why now USD is so expensive, because everybody wants to put their money there due to the perceived pro-business stance of Trump.

Getting way off topic, sorry! :D

I didn't realize LH/AF is setting up a base or another carrier in Malaysia. Why would they want to turn that money around for MY ops without repatriating it back to DE? They just keep all their in MYR hoping that one day it'll appreciate and then repatriate it back in EUR? How are they going to invest in anything (buy new planes, pay their staff in DE, secure new loans, marketing etc.)?

Basic economics that cheaper exchange rate should drive more money to that country? Let's all invest in Egypt now ;) (OT: I think a few MW members are indeed investing in airline tickets from Egypt now)

And "USD is expensive because everybody wants to put money there now" -- your previous statement just contradicted this. Basic economics state that cheaper exchange rate should drive more money to that country but yet people are putting money in USD because they are so expensive?
