  1. Wonder if our current PM would suggest some new routes to MAB

LAX direct perhaps? Either the A350 or 787-9

As much as I would love a LAX-KUL nonstop, it wouldn't be happening in the near future. Nonstop flights on UA for LAX-SIN is yours for $380 USD! And if you are flying to KUL, the UA/NH JV covers it well - flights are frequently $400 USD or less. Then they have corporate contracts to fill up the premium cabin. Where is MH going to get the corporate contracts from?

  2.

In the case of the Kuala Lumpur–Bangalore route, Mavcom said it allocated 360 seats to Malindo Air and 24 seats to AirAsia in June. Following these allocations, Malindo Air operates 360 seats and AirAsia operates 744 seats per week, while Malaysia Airlines Bhd continues to operate 1,920 seats from its previous allocation made by the transport ministry, prior to Mavcom’s establishment.
“We battled and fought to get those additional slots, but now it is being allocated to another airline that is not even using them,” Kamarudin claimed, saying AirAsia was part of the Malaysian delegation at the meeting.

What is AK going to do with 24 seats (unless they are already blocking seats due to bilateral)?

OD might not be using them, but did they apply for it and gave a tentative start date? Either way, both OD and AK can get around MY-IN bilateral using one of their ID's subsidiary like they have for flights to BOM and MAA.

Mavcom should use bidding on those routes that has limited slots/seats. Those who desperately wants will bid higher. If not use, will cost them $$$. And airlines are allowed to trade with each other.

Let's not monetize everything. The smaller or less-funded carrier will always lose in this case. They should argue their case on why they are the best airline to be given the privilege to serve that route.

  3. YVR-TPE-KUL is one of my most flown TPAC routes. Oh, if only... :D

I can see how it'd be a huge money loser though. Even SQ can't find a way to make YVR work.

KUL-TPE-YVR only operated twice a week (Wednesdays and Fridays only) - does that work for you :p It's a daytime flight both east and westbound. IIRC, it was MH 98/99.

CA-SG/MY market is tiny. SQ pretty much relied on fifth freedom ICN-YVR to make the flight worked for them previously.

  4. MH also flew to Malé, Kolkata, Kochi, Ahmedabad, Brisbane, Darwin, Buenos Aires, Kunming, Chengdu (which MH plans to resume), Xi'an, Guilin, Yogyakarta, Vientiane and Krabi :). Man I feel super old today for remembering those destinations I saw on the KUL/SZB departure board!

Vancouver and Mexico City? Whoa.. haha

Correct. Routing was KUL-TPE-YVR and KUL-TPE-LAX-MEX.

    Even Busan? Really? Wow!

Correct too. IIRC, the routing was KUL-SEL-PUS-KUL.

If I recall correctly, Mexico City was a fifth freedom flight served from LAX & was cancelled after the US revoked MH's fifth freedom rights due to complaints by one of the US3.

Incorrect lol. It was the Mexican authorities that revoked MH's fifth freedom rights. MH and US had very liberal air agreements back then (not open skies, but very liberal; US-MY open-skies was signed in 1997). Mexico suspended Malaysia's fifth freedom rights on 01JAN1997. US3 was maybe US10+ when MH served MEX (but also only 2 airlines from each country were allowed to serve a city pair, e.g. only 2 American and 2 Mexican carriers were able to serve LAX-MEX back then).

  5. Fukuoka? Nice!!

It's a route application, not firm (yet).

MH was the first airline in ASEAN to fly to all 6 continents! They flew to Buenos Aires and Mexico City waaay before any of the ME3 and definitely waaaay ahead of any regional rivals (ASEAN)..

They've flown to Zagreb, Stockholm, Munich, Manchester, Paris, Madrid, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Beirut, Vienna, Istanbul, Rome, Newark, LAX, Cairo, Brussels, Zurich over the years. Not all at the same time though...

MH also flew to Honolulu (way before D7 :p)

  6. Has anyone considered that maybe Ryanair was the one who poached Mr. Bellew? They could have offered him a huge compensation package with tax benefits etc. I am not saying that's the reason, but it could be a possible reason or factor. Or maybe he's just frustrated that he does not have full autonomy in running the airline, but it's something we won't find out.

PS: I think someone dropped the ball there. Ryanair's announcement caught MH and maybe Mr. Bellew by surprise!

  7. IIRC, he also said he will serve the full contract term.

Who in their right mind will publicly announce that they are planning to leave their job if they havent received a firm offer from a competing firm (with the exception of resignation)? Of course PB will say hell continue his full term and would welcome future terms.

  8. Airside transfer will be more meaningful if include checked in luggage.

Do people not read articles anymore or is it too much work to click on the link and read the article in its entirety?

It's right there in the article!

Managing Director Datuk Badlisham Ghazali said passengers with other onward international destinations would no longer be required to check out their baggage at the main terminal where they arrive.

“More interestingly, passengers and their respective baggage will also be transferred free between both terminals,” he added.

  9. That will be the end of almost 33 years of KA service to the airline's first ever commercial destination...and quite a reduction in seat capacity on the route too.

Wonder what cause it to make such decision?

Didn't know BKI was one of KA's first destination, but good to know. But AK has twice daily flights to HKG, so that could be a reason. MH stopped flying BKI-HKG a while back (when you could fly KUL-KCH-BKI-HKG vv on MH 60/61).

  10. LHR isn't cheaper as a stopover destination. I personally would prefer going through HEL.

Maybe I haven't explored HEL as much as you did, but food is definitely way more expensive compared to London. And HEL is quite boring TBH. I've been there a few times - lovely city and people for sure, but not much to offer. A short plane/boat hop to Tallinn is very nice tho :)

  11. Then they announced that the A332s will be used for AKL - this is currently an A333 route.

So what will it be? Lets wait and see!

If you read AusBT, they didn't report that MH announced that they are going to send 332s to AKL. The only official word coming from MH from the article is:

A spokesman for Malaysia Airlines told Australian Business Traveller that there were no plans to use the Airberlin A330-200 jets to recommence flights to Brisbane, as the airline wanted to offer the same A330-300 business class on all Australian routes.

"It is too premature for us to consider new routes currently. The lease of these six second hand Airbus A330-200 is as replacement for six narrowbody Boeing 737 that are being returned to lessors" and will allow the airline "to bridge the next generation wide-body aircraft orders" for the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners.

If not mistaken they are not confirming anything yet and said they are still exploring some of the options available... it just us who speculate a lot of things :D

    Correct! :)

  12. From AusBT:

“We’ll also be doing a lot with the food, a lot with the experience on board and a lot with the experience on the ground at London and Kuala Lumpur, and that will give a lot of added benefit to our [First] customers," Bellew previously shared with Australian Business Traveller.

    ....

A second European route for the final pair of A350s remains under consideration, with Bellew previously telling Australian Business Traveller that this would hinge on a joint venture agreement with another airline. "If we can form a joint venture with another airline it might make sense, because it's the ideal way to get another European destination. The only way I can see it succeeding would be to work closely with another carrier." Failing that, "we’ll use them for something like services to Shanghai and Tokyo."

My highlight in bold. Current FCL dining on MH is just an additional main course option compared to J (excluding appetizers, canapés, desserts, and Chef-on-Call).

This is the same as Lufthansa's ex-US routes between F and J meals (an additional main course option plus different appetizers etc.). But then again, I've never had mind blowing food ex-US on any airline in any cabin.

JV with another European airline? LH Group is out - so KL/AF/AY/IB? God forbid, Wizz Air? :D

  13. I'm guessing that frees up an A333 for regional use. But I'm also wondering if this is a temporary arrangement since the A350 is supposed to fly to AKL, unless they've changed their minds.

I believe AKL is highly seasonal so KUL-AKL during Southern Winter is probably too premium heavy (plus no airline, IIRC, offers F to AKL other than SQ/EK).

In the Australian BT report linked above, they said they would use the same equipment for all Australian routes. So.....

It should read all Australian *insert* except WA routes :p

If you read what the press is reporting, you have PB saying it's going to PER, DEL, BOM, etc. and regional routes only. But then AuBT says it's going to CGK, BKK, DEL, BOM (at least DEL/BOM is consistent) plus AKL. I can certainly see those 332s going to SIN/HKG during peak periods, but didn't a MH insider said the 332s aren't going to do long-haul (because it's not configured for it)?

But seriously, MH timing is really bad for arrival - unless one has family and friends to pick up, it is not that convenient.

MH126/127 is targeting ex-PER traffic rather than ex-KUL. The defunct MH124/125 was targeting ex-Malaysia/Europe.

  14. It blows my mind as well those people who often criticise MH's decisions are the ones who want MH to return to AMS and US.

But yet doesn't buy MH tickets to those places. EK RM1 cheaper? Let's fly EK instead.

Same goes for those who criticizes MH business product. They don't buy J tickets but complain it's sub-standard compared to SQ 😂. People who buys J will sure prefer old 332 flat beds than new BSI recliner J on MH 126/127/386/387 etc. ;)
