I would have delayed the announcement, but I guess they were chasing MATTA Fair. Not sure if entirely smart decision, as many of my friends and relatives seem to just ask "Eh big discounts for what if flight is cancelled later?"

Under normal circumstances, now is the best time to reveal Summer 2025 expansion. Gives them about 6 months lead time to promote the new route. They can't delay it much longer. Every week they delay, is every week they lose potential revenue. If there are any new long haul airlines to KUL, we should hear about it within the next 1-2 months depending on when the airline plan to fly to KUL. Remember BNE was snuck into the schedule about a month before being pulled out.

Speaking of BNE, MAVCOM latest limited air traffic rights spreadsheet (current as of 13 August 2024) indicates that MH is still holding on to their 727 seats. Still no idea where they'd get the 294 seater A333 from and an airline relinquished 566 seats back into the pool. If MH grabs those, they'd have more than sufficient seats for 4x A330 weekly services.

That could be Da Nang's french like village though.

Dine 'in the clouds' with Mercure Da Nang and Ba Na Hills

Could be. But I remember seeing something along the lines of new destination announcement for 2025 at Matta Fair 2024.

Don’t know if now is a good time for a new route announcement because a lot of people were affected by the recent cancelations. But from an airline’s perspective, now is the time to announce Summer 2025 expansion. Gives them time to promote it and also for forward booking.

  3. It seems like MH released a hint for their new European route set to launch in 2025 on their social before deleting it. According to the teaser, it should be announced at Matta fair this week. Or maybe they are canceling that route now due to the mess they are in. MH intern is back!

MH now turns off comment on their advertisement. Aiyo!~~~~~~

This is probably to curtail dumb people who keep putting their PNR and real name on social media. Anyone or organization who has nefarious intents can easily access the booking and obtain a lot of information about the passenger. I've seen quite a few people pretending to be from MH and trying to "assist" stranded passengers.

If is inline with EU should be sufficient.

I think EU/UK 261 compensation is an exception for most countries.  But other provisions could be adopted.

its still weak and doesn't address many many issues. No EU261 compensation, nothing to tighten and enforce an airlines responsibility to passengers during IRROPS>

MH are refusing to reroute many affected people or use certain airlines. There latest is that they will not place you on another carrier until 14 or less days before your flight. By this time the fights will be sold out.

Malaysian carriers will go bankrupt if they are required to pay RM600 for delay of 3 hours or more (and not even €600) lol. I don't think there are other countries other than those in the EU and UK that has this form of compensation. Not that I am opposed to it, but baby steps. The refund for any unused taxes, fees and surcharges is huge. I don't believe even the EU has that. But then again, what's stopping airlines from charging say a RM300 fee to cancel and those taxes, surcharges will be refunded after you pay that RM300 fee 🤔

I know of people who were put on TG or CI. But no such luck for me. They wouldn't even let me change other segments of the itinerary which is dumb (only segment 2 is affected out of the 4 segment trip). They told me that those are voluntary changes and I will be charged fare difference. But I have a short trip and MH rebooked my flight 9 hours later making it almost a trip in vain.

I've friends whose flights are moved 5 days later (ICN/NRT) and when they asked if MH will pay for their accommodation or missed work days whilst stuck in Seoul, MH flatly said out no.

I normally book my flights many months in advance for my holidays. Often I receive flight change notification from the airlines from the time I book to departure date. Sometimes the change could be as minor as 10 minutes, or alternate days but all of them would ask if I accept the change or a full refund. The happened to one of my flights with MH a couple of months ago.

i thought this is already a common practice in aviation industry but it seems not, at least for MH from what I read above ?

It is common practice with MH too. I received text and email about flight changes. If it's a minor one, then they'll usually accept. Thankfully until last week, I haven't had a major schedule change/cancelations with MH. And before this meltdown, MH was quite accommodating because they only have to deal with maybe several hundreds of re-accommodation after a schedule change/cancellations rather than now in the tens of thousands.

They didn't invest in their IT to allow passengers to perform changes by themselves and there are problems with phone agents reissuing tickets (or rather some changes made through phone agents weren't reissued at all), and the refund still shows a penalty for anyone who has a canceled flight. All these should have been done ages ago (Mavcom require mandatory refund for any canceled flights and it's not new). People will forgive when MH dropped the ball (everyone fumbles in life). If MH made up with passengers by offering the best connection or flight with other airlines, sure it's inconvenience but they tried their best and there's nothing more MH could have done. But this is the complete opposite.

  6. Anthony Loke announced today that carriers must provide refunds (to the original form of payment or if the passenger agrees, a credit shell or travel vouchers) if the delay is greater than 5 hours. There isn't much info available at this time but are carriers required to provide a refund due a "schedule change" instead of a delay or did he mean as long as it's >5 hours from the schedule when you first bought the tickets.

Among other things included in this consumer protection amendments to the Mavcom Act includes:

    - Mandatory refunds for fuel surcharges, taxes, and fees (including but not limited to departure levy, PSC, carbon fees etc.) even if the ticket is 100% non refundable for flights not taken by the passenger (huge win!). I guess those airlines that have high YQ but low fare base e.g. TK may have to revise their fares to/from/via Malaysia.
    - Any changes to scheduled departure time must be communicated to passengers at least 2 weeks prior to departure with extraordinary (e.g. weather) or  unavoidable technical issues
    - All canceled flights must be removed from all booking systems
    - Any denied boarding must be communicated to passengers at check-in or at the gate
    - Time limit for passengers to submit a compliant has been extended from 1 to 2 years

  7. You know things would have been much better if the company owned up to their FUBAR mess. I was told that I couldn't change the rest of my trip/ticket without paying a penalty because those are voluntary changes. But what about those people whose flights are changed up to a week difference! That's just plain nuts. They rather let passengers cancel and refund than accommodate them on their own flights. If they really want to go beyond what's expected of them (which is quite a low bar to set now), let all passengers have 1 free change.

The crew had to use pillows owing to the padding being worn out.

The 73H barely has any padding lol. I don't mind either one for KUL-BKK (my last trip on MTU was fine), but I wouldn't fly the 332 on any frame for say KUL-AKL.

Which alternative flight have they offered you? If you want a free refund for a non flexi ticket then you usually need to contact them

Well they offered me the 2150 flight (MH796) where all the other earlier flights are still available, just not in my booking class. I wasn't going to refund, I was just curious if they'd do a no-penalty refund. And I'd take the 332 J cabin over the 73H J cabin anytime lol. For a 2 hour flight, that seat is pretty comfy especially if you are in 2K.

They canceled my flight but my flight was also an A332 that's quite full (something like <5 seats available both front and back).

CAAM/MAVCOM and MOT is again failing the industry. All these people only care about their fat pay cheques and nothing else!

You know what's a big pay cheque? Bringing airlines to court when they pull these sort of things and get a hefty fine out of them. Clearly some airlines are selling flights they are intending to cancel. This is fraud.

  11. They canceled one of my flights and out of curiosity, I just clicked on the cancel and refund page. They have the audacity to charge a penalty for a refund! If anyone is in similar situation and wants a refund, just file a chargeback from your credit card (never ever use debit card, e-wallet, bank transfer etc. for an air ticket) or file a MAVCOM complaint. They are required to provide you a full refund (or partial refund based on the segments you've flown) by Mavcom.

Anything with an A330 or A350 is at risk and I expect teh A330's to be pulled from BKK

That is affirmative for BKK. 330 flights to BKK flight gone and I am one of those affected. Oddly enough, I am seeing 359 being sent to PVG!

  13. Looking at flight availability for a week in September, I hope they have manpower to deal with the massive cancelations. Quite a few flights are already zeroed out. If they do cancel all these zeroed out flights, MH pax are in for a wild ride at least until end of September. Cities such as MEL and SYD are down to maybe 7-10 flights a week, most ICN/NRT daytime flights ex-KUL and some redeye ex-KUL are all zeroed out along with some flights to AKL, PVG, PKX, KIX. The "safest" routes seem to be India, DOH, and LHR.

  14. Nice PR move. Released this on a Saturday afternoon so it'll be dead by Monday. Are they going to lease some A333/B738 soon or are they still bargain hunting? It does seem like they are too optimistic about scheduling if this is going to affect flights all the way to December, or perhaps they have learned not to schedule flights too tightly counting on perfect operations.

  15. Seems like MH just canceled quite a number of flights for the next 2 weeks. One my flights was consolidated and flights to NRT, ICN, PKX, PVG, SYD (literally no flights to SYD on 29/8), MEL, and the list goes on. I am curious when will their network will just collapse at this point. Daytime flights to NRT/ICN seems to be canceled for most days except for 1-2 remaining service with some crazy schedule change.

The big test will come in about 3 weeks during the school holidays and the Malaysia Day long weekend.

  16. MAHB released their traffic snapshot for July 2024 recently. A few highlights:

KUL pax numbers (in '000) for July 2024:
    Total: 5,198 (1,412 domestic; 1,786 ASEAN; 2,000 non-Asean)
    T1: 2,824 (625 domestic; 797 ASEAN; 1,402 non-ASEAN)
    T2: 2,374 (787 domestic; 988 ASEAN; 599 non-ASEAN)

KUL pax numbers (in '000) from Jan-Jul 2024:
    Total: 32,551 (8,746 domestic, 11,335 ASEAN; 12,471 non-ASEAN)
    T1: 17,588 (3,908 domestic; 4,962 ASEAN; 8,718 non-ASEAN)
    T2: 14,964 (4,838 domestic; 6,373 ASEAN; 3,752 non-ASEAN)

  17. Seems like quite a few widebody flight are canceled today. MH 194 to BOM, MH 52 to KIX, MH 66 to ICN, and MH 88 to NRT. On top of that, MH is operating flights to/from NRT that's connects to/from AA/JL's US flights seamlessly for the next 2 days.

    MH48 0800KUL - NRT1610
    MH89 1725KUL - KUL2350

Is MH operating to cities like ICN, PKX, NRT whenever they feel like it? Their schedule just changes whenever. I think it was last week when they were operating 2 redeye to NRT for a few days straight. PKX is almost always delayed until the MH140 inbound arrives, so leaving around 5-6AM.

And I am curious if someone will bring a Malaysian carrier to court like what they did in Australia with QF. Malaysia based carriers are definitely selling tickets knowingly they will cancel (and cancelation usually comes a few days before flights) due to aircraft availability or just low loads.

  18. Seems like MH is giving yesterday's (19th Aug.) MH 128 from MEL pax a tour of Australia's outback after a mechanical issue (unconfirmed: engine failure) forced them to divert to Alice Springs. MH is arranging with QF to shuttle them out to other cities to fly pax to their final destination. 9M-MTJ is the frame involved.

And in other news, MH has finally introduced a more well-known coffee brand to its on-board catering. illy coffee will now be served alongside with Nescafe Gold Blend 😬

  19. I am curious if MH plans to switch MH70 (daytime flight to NRT) to a redeye flight. They seem to be operating on that schedule for the past 5 days. I assume MH can't get an aircraft turnaround to meet the curfew hence they are doing delaying it by about 10 hours and operate it as a redeye. Just like their previous LHR mess, isn't it better to cancel just one flight and do a reset instead of delaying 5 flights?! At some point when the schedule mismatch the number of planes, it's easier to cancel a few flights rather than delaying a lot of flights (speaking of which, MH 388 to PVG, MH 366 to TPE, and MH 88 to NRT was canceled yesterday).

All for the Muslims brotherhood. Visa was imposed on Colombia quite possibly due to its infamous status as the drug epicenter. Colombia returned the favour in 2018. Lol!

Talking about visa-free visit, the recent Henley Passport Index release ranks Malaysia passport at 12th with 182 countries and territories.. As usual, Singapore is #1 with 195 countries and territories. Comparing both passports:

Colombia is no longer the drug epicenter. It doesn't make sense when Mexico gets visa free where as Colombians don't (if drugs are to be blamed). Hence I said, they need to relook at their visa policies and whilst they are at, check if countries such as Czechoslovakia or Yugoslavia still exists in any of our MOFA websites/references. Colombia is a decently sized tourism country now (mostly inbound) and outbound to Europe and North America. I don't know where Malaysians get the idea that Colombia is very dangerous from - some places are more dangerous than others but it's no Venezuela (which apparently we have visa waiver reciprocal arrangement with lol).

And from the list, the countries most Malaysians want to visit but require a visa (comparing with Singaporeans) are Canada and US and for a small population, Israel (before October 2023), Armenia, and Serbia. The latter two along with Turks and Caicos will waive the visa requirements if you have a US or Canada visa. They will waive for Schengen/UK/ANZ etc. visa holders too but it's moot point for us since we don't require a tourist visa for those countries (work visa is accepted tho).
