Fuming over costly aviation fuel

By NELSON BENJAMIN

JOHOR BARU: Dozens of flying clubs, schools and private plane owners in the country are fuming because while the prices of fuel for vehicles continue to drop, the price of aviation fuel (Avgas) has shot up drastically.

The price of fuel used to power piston-powered propeller planes like the Cessna and small helicopters was hovering around RM6.20 per litre in May but has now increased by 54% to RM9.55 per litre on Oct 30.

Avgas price also differed according to places as it is sold at RM9.53 in Kuala Lumpur and RM9.80 in Langkawi.

Operators said this would hurt the aviation industry as flying schools would be forced to charge higher fuel surcharges for those training for their Commercial Pilots Licence (CPL) or their Private Pilots Licence (PPL).

Flying clubs in Johor say it made more economic sense to fly to Singapore and refuel there as the price is RM6 (S$2.61) per litre at the island republic.

Capt Gurcharan Singh, the director of Fras Flying Club that operates in Senai said Petronas should not raise prices at its whims and fancies.

He said the world oil price had dipped by 50% but Avgas prices had increased by 50% from May and was higher than in Singapore and Thailand.

“How are we to cope with the price increases,” said Capt Gurcharan Singh, whose two aircraft consumed about 30 litres of Avgas an hour, adding that both Singapore and Thailand were buying fuel from Australia.

Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) of Malaysia president, Capt K. Sivaraman, said flying schools students for CPL now pays about RM220,000 and another RM70,000 for fuel surcharge while fees for a PPL increased to RM40,000 from the present RM25,000.

He said the price for Avgas had steadily increased since the 1970s when it was only RM1.

A Royal Selangor Flying Club official said a price hike now would be bad for business now that they have recruited 25 students.

“The additional charges will have to be passed on to our members and they may not fly that much now,” said the official, adding that the club used about 25 drums per month.

Each drum contained 200 litres of Avgas.

A private aircraft owner known only as Teoh said Petronas had a monopoly on Avgas supply at all airports and as it ran out of supplies, it was buying fuel from Thailand.

He advised Petronas to better manage its stock and not burden them, adding that no fuel was available for 10 days last week.

A check at the Selatar airport in Singapore showed that Avgas was being sold at S$2.61 (RM6) per litre and an airport official said the price had dropped from S$2.64 (RM6.07) per litre three months ago.

Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Shahrir Samad when contacted said the ministry had no control over Avgas and thought its price had dropped but promised to look into the matter.

:help: Does anyone know anybody in Petronas? - Avgas supply is getting more and more scarce..

Only available in Subang (SZB), Senai (JHB), and Penang (PEN)? Anybody know of any supply in East Malaysia - either Kuching/Kota Kinabalu? :search:

Also Petronas @ PEN don't even want to fix their credit card payment terminal for over 5 months.. :sorry:
