  1. No jet-setter, she jets for work, she’s Rosmah

Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor has defended her trip to Qatar using a government jet, saying it was for work purposes and not leisure, and everything had been done according to procedure.

"I do not expect people to thank me or be appreciative of the little effort which I have put it. But please stop looking for faults in others, or meddle in other people's affairs," the Prime Minister's wife told news portal the Malaysia Gazette over the weekend.

"And do not create stories because that is a major sin. I never talk bad about others. I never bad mouth the opposition."

Rosmah said that it was a common sight for the wives of world leaders to utilise their government's private jets for various factors, citing Bangladesh, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Cambodia.

"What I do, I do because of Allah. Let them slander me, thrown accusations at me or smear my image."

Rosmah explained her reason for last month's trip to Qatar, Dubai, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh which had triggered uproar in parliament after PKR’s Gombak MP, Azmin Ali, had revealed that Rosmah had used a government jet for the trip.

"I was given the honour of presenting the keynote speech entitled 'The Empowerment of Malaysian Women' and was also honoured with an award," Rosmah said.

"I shared the success of Malaysian women with the international audience but ironically, while I was expressing Malaysia's pride, there were disgruntled voices at home."

While attending the 4th Qatar International Businesswomen forum, Rosmah said she paid her respects to Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Abdullah Nasser Khalifa Al-Thani, adding that when wives of other Prime Ministers visited Malaysia, they also did the same thing as it was courtesy.

She, however, evaded the issue of her not using commercial flights, saying it should not be an issue because everything that she did was always referred to the Cabinet for approval first.

"The facility of a government private jet existed before Datuk Seri Najib Razak became the Prime Minister," she said.

On her relationship with wives of foreign leaders, she said: "Without sounding boastful, my close relationships with the wives of other foreign leaders have at time proved advantageous for Malaysians."

At the recent Umno assembly, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak praised Rosmah’s work and highlighted in his winding-up speech two instances when Rosmah had helped Malaysia.

The first was when she contacted Suzanne Mubarak, wife of the then Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, in securing the release of a Malaysian student who was arrested on suspicion of being a spy.

The second was when Malaysian students were stranded in Egypt during the Arab uprising.

Najib said Rosmah had used her good relations with the Saudi Arabian royal family to allow the students to enter the country from Egypt although they did not have visas.

However, former New Straits Times group editor-in-chief Datuk A. Kadir Jasin said Najib should consider appointing his wife as Minister of Special Affairs as she seems to be adept at carrying out the duties of several ministers. – December 16, 2013.

Haha bit of humor on a slow Tuesday morning!

  2. Allowing Rosmah on official jet an abuse of power, says Pakatan MPs

Opposition lawmakers have accused the Cabinet of acting irresponsibly and in an undignified manner for approving the use of a government jet for a recent trip by Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor (pic) to Qatar.

They said the decision was an abuse of power and interfered in the country's administration.

"If the prime minister can't attend, then a minister or an ambassador can be sent in his stead, not his wife.

"When Obama was unable to come to Malaysia, he sent his representative, not his wife," PAS vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar said sarcastically, referring to the US President's cancellation of his Malaysian visit last month. In his place were US Secretary of State John Kerry and Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker.

Mahfuz, questioning Rosmah's credentials in representing the country, warned the Cabinet's decision was dangerous for the future of the country.

"This is a Cabinet without any dignity and highly irresponsible to make a decision based on one person instead of taking national interest into account," he said.

Rosmah was in Qatar last week to deliver a keynote address at the 4th Qatar International Business Women Forum in Doha, organised by the Qatari Businesswomen Association and the Interactive Business Network.

Accompanying her were Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil, who is special adviser to the prime minister on women entrepreneurs and professionals; Datin Seri Siti Rubiah Datuk Abdul Samad, wife of the Foreign Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman; Datin Seri Khamarzan Ahmad Meah, wife of International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed; and Datin Seri Che Kamariah Zakaria, wife of Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh.

PKR Kelana Jaya MP Wong Chen said Rosmah was neither the country's representative nor ambassador.

"It sets a terrible precedent and shows no semblance of decency on the government's part," he charged.

DAP's Klang MP Charles Santiago said the Cabinet's decision was an abuse of power and waste of public resources.

"She is not an elected representative and giving her permission to fly on a government jet is an abuse of power.

"If she is accompanying the prime minister I would have understood but she was flying on her own to Qatar," he added, saying there was financial imprudence as well as an absence of clear protocols.

Putrajaya has defended Rosmah's use of the official jet, saying her trip was "fruitful".

"The outcome of the visit was very positive, we must be proud and thankful of the efforts and hardwork put in by the prime minister's wife.

"A visit to a foreign country is not for fun, it involved a lot of responsibilities," said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim. - November 20, 2013.

Have we run out of eminent Malaysian women to represent the country that we have to resort to ministers' wives? Are they entrepreneurs?

    They're having a laugh.

  3. KUALA LUMPUR: The use of national carrier Malaysia Airlines (MAS) for

the Prime Minister's official overseas visits is unsuitable for several

    factors.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim

said MAS does not cover all areas and it is unsuitable for the country's

leader to board commercial aircraft with the other passengers.

"It involves the country's image. This means the Prime Minister has to wait with the other passengers (before he can fly ).

"To charter a MAS aircraft will incur higher costs for the government,"

he said when winding up debate on Supply Bill 2014 at committee stage in

    Parliament today.

  4. Kudat METAR around time of crash

If the a/c was taking off/landing runway 22, then the crosswind component gusts to about 23 knots from the right, but it crashed on the north side, which is confusing, unless something went wrong with the propeller pitch mechanism on starboard engine?

Wonder what's the maximum demonstrated crosswind component for the Twin Otter?

  5. Why do people immediately assume that 30 year old planes are inherently unsafe? In America 40 year old DC-9s still flies passengers millions of miles safely without a hitch. Heck, 60-70 year old DC-3s are still flying safely across much more treacherous surroundings than Kudat!

I seriously doubt the Twotter's age is a key factor in this.

That has already pointed out the message that I wanted to get across as regards your post.
