Apparently they cant do a direct delivery all the way to KUL as there is no dispensation from CAM to do so and MAB is still applying again to allow direct. Plane is coming from America flying east bound

Interesting. Why is special permission needed to fly directly into KUL? Seems awfully inefficient to fly eastbound from California when TPAC is most direct. Reminds me of that BFI-KUL (now SZB) record-breaking flight by an MH 77E in 1997.

On my recent international flight with MH, I noticed that the cabin crew put their hands over their chest (like a normal Malaysian thank you) and then bow at the front of the cabin whilst the purser was making the thank you announcement. I saw them doing it in Y too. Is this a new thing? I haven't seen something like outside of Japanese and Korean carriers.

They've been trying to find some sort of unique cultural greeting (like TG's 'wai' or the Japanese/Korean bowing), and that hand-over-the-chest is what they settled on. It just feels a bit forced if I'm being honest. If only they spent that much effort into actually improving their product.

With AMS’ “green cap” in the news today, I am curious if MH can even get slots at AMS if they wanted to resume AMS.

Airlines with historical slots will receive 3.1% slots less for Summer 24 whilst airlines without historical slots will not receive slots at all. Is MH considered an airline with historical slot?

Maybe it’s time for MH to fly back into CDG, FRA and the likes to preserve slots for future. I’ve read somewhere that ICN is getting close to full as well. And HND (either MH cant make it work or they don’t have a slot).

AMS is sort of unprecedented as they are basically barring any new entrants to AMS.

I don't know about AMS slots, but I can definitely see the merits of resuming CDG. It's really a big gap in KUL's connectivity, and since AF is showing no interest in returning (BKK and SIN are working very well for them), MH has the upper hand here.

MH will get less connecting traffic in FRA, but DE-MY business traffic might just be considerable enough to make it work. They really shouldn't continue allowing SQ to be our de facto national carrier.

You forgot to mention they carried the highest passengers among all the Europe-based airlines. In 2022 Ryanair Group carried 160 million passengers in the calendar year, this was 58% more than Lufthansa Group's 102 million.

It may not be a like for like comparison. I think our back of the envelope calculation of MyAirlines avertage ticket price includes taxes and other fees, not just the fare.

In other words...... just looking at the average ticket price is hardly a fair analysis :)

RM176! Oh dear, how can you sustain an airline company when each ticket is sold on average RM176.......I know I am oversimplifying but......

Ryanair had an average fare of 27EUR (~135MYR) in 2021 and they seem to be doing fine.

MAVCOM needs to seriously review future AOC applications - MyArilines has done more harm than good to the Malaysian aviation industry. Irrational competition is bad for the industry as a whole while healthy, sustainable competition is the way to go.

Why give AOC then? The competition for low cost low yield routes is crazy. MH, AK and OD are killing each other and all are competing on mostly the same routes.

just leave it like this …

If they denied the AOC, they’d be accused of protectionism by the general public who clamour for cheaper fares. It’s just impossible to please everyone.

ID closed the old BDO airport and this new airport is located a good 100km from the city of Bandung. Makes KUL seems like Haneda now. MH even provides complimentary shuttle from KJT to the city (takes 1.5 hours according to their website but who knows).

And I am curious why most of these secondary/tertiary ID (other than KNO/DPS) cities get these departure from KUL? YIA, KJT, PKU all departs around 1700-1900 and arrives back to KUL close to midnight. Even SUB's daily flight whilst not the most ideal, departs around 07:00.

Are they tight on frames earlier in the day? I can't imagine slots being that big an issue here.

The flights don't connect well to most places (apart from DOH), but I suppose they don't see much connecting potential for these routes.

Probably due to cargo as well. PEN is part of the semi-conductor supply chain of those giant chipmakers in Taiwan. High value cargo. More belly cargo capacity on A333.

That was my initial thought as well. But if cargo were a big reason they should be flying 333's year round, and CI Cargo already flies there, which makes me think it's driven by passenger demand.

flydubai launches daily service to Langkawi and Penang in Malaysia

Nice to see LGK get long-haul service again but I guess this rules out EK launching PEN. IIRC it was slated to be DXB-SIN-PEN with 5th freedom rights but never actually launched because of Covid. That would've been a very interesting ride.

You are making strawman argument here, just like what you did always. Truthfully, it is waste of time making argument with you.

Gazetted or otherwise, that's the direction the government is going.

No, Cambodia Siem Reap, and Vietnam HCM and everywhere else you can use either local currency or USD. You are not obligated to pay in USD, if you are not aware. If you have not seen how cheap alcohol is in Cambodia, suggest you drop by a visit to Pub Street at Siem Reap, Cambodia.

As I mentioned before, getting to Langkawi is definitely difficult because if I want quick access to fly from Sabah, Sarawak or Johor hopping over from backpacking in Singapore or even Thailand from Bangkok, there is no or lack of air connection to Langkawi. Your point of emphasizing on KUL or SZB is mooted.

Airlines are better at identifying travel patterns than you seem to think. The nimble ones like AirAsia (to put it in a Malaysian context) are even better placed to respond to that demand, by create point-to-point routes where demand exists. It's no coincidence that AK serves LGK-SIN but not -DMK.

Then there's the approach of putting the cart before the horse, i.e. by creating/subsidising routes for the sake of stimulating demand. I'm certainly not opposed to that, but when experiments like LGK-DOH/LHR (some of the largest aviation global aviation hubs) failed, doesn't that tell you something about the limits of this approach?

And I don't really get why the price of booze is being harped on here, as if slashing prices would fill Langkawi's beaches. Singapore is hands down a more expensive place to drink (and eat, and shop, and stay). I don't see any shortage of tourists there, even with a strong currency.

Is that why you've been directly quoting Craig's posts, even responding with unnecessarily personal remarks when your assertions were being challenged?

Not a whole lot of difference, but assuming MH needs a bit of a markup, that RM26 difference could mean a ticket that will be increased from RM400 (for RM18 meal) to RM450 (RM38 meal) for a oneway to BKK/CGK. And MH will probably lose pax to TG/AK/OD/Z9. And for other airlines flying into KUL, the increase in catering cost will only affect a few flights a day where as for MH, this will affect almost all their KUL outbound flights.

Meanwhile people are calling for government intervention to lower domestic airfare… 🤷‍♂️

I don't know if it is driven by spite or commercial reason, maybe you can tell us perhaps? And what's up with the same broken record "taxpayer's money" again and again? You do know Sabah and Sarawak have taxpaying citizens also right? You do know Sarawak itself is setting up their own wealth sovereign fund for local and international investment right? What they want to do with those money is up to them, as I mentioned before, whether or not they swim or sink is all up to them.

Perhaps you didn't understand my question. You claimed MH and AK have been neglecting East Malaysia for decades. I'm asking why you believe so.

  14. 21 hours ago, JuliusWong said:

Why not? Malaysia Airlines has been neglecting both Sabah and Sarawak for the past decades, AirAsia is charging exorbitant fees and charges since Day 1, and almost every international destination, Sabahans and Sarawakians need to fly to KUL to transit. Each state has their two state owned aviation company (shady or not shady is another story). Why not decentralise the decision making to each respective Wilayah for them to make their own decision? Sink or swim they will be responsible themselves.

Do you think that neglect is driven by spite or commercial reasons? If the East Malaysian market were such a cash cow, I do wonder why MH and AK are so blind to that pot of gold. Unless, you mean providing incentives to those airlines to build up their hubs there, and connect BKI/KCH/MYY etc. to the world. But then again, I thought using taxpayer's money to fund our airlines is a big no-no.

On another note, I'm surprised to hear every state has two carriers. Didn't realise the Malaysian aviation field is THAT crowded.

The oldest A333ceo is only 12 years old, whilst the newest -MTO has even celebrated her 10th birthday yet.

These A333’s are barely at half-life and fulfil the regional (intra Asia routes) perfectly, hoping these remain in the fleet for those missions.

Also as a side note -MTD hasn’t flown since 21 June, is this just maintenance related?

I wouldn't say a 10-12 year old 333 is particularly young. Sure, they can operate for many more years in general, but hopefully not with MH. Unless they on doing complete refurbishments of old aircraft (DL style), which seems unlikely given MH's track record, I hope they're retired sooner than later.

I thought once QR's dispute with Airbus is settled, more 350s are coming their way, both thru repair of existing aircraft plus new delivery which then make way for MH to stop operating 2 out of 3 daily DOH rotations. And it was not the case so far.

There are plenty of markets that need more capacity. OW hubs like KUL, TYO, HEL and MAD can be covered by partner airlines as a stopgap.

Have not used SQ to KUL for a while owing to cost and my focus on Oneworld. Thats a quite a reduction in schedule to KUL, I guess people are not willing to pay top $

The ground experience is hands down better through MH, especially if you have an afternoon/evening flight out of SIN.
