It seems MAS took the blame in PRC social media for cash missing in Batik Air flight incident.

Would be useful if this was in a language we all speak.

I have an upcoming flight with MH TPE-KUL on 8/5/24. I received a notification email from MH yesterday that the flight is now cancelled and they offer me alternate dates or refund.

When I check on their website it seems the cancellation only happens on 8/5/24, not a regular schedule change thing.

My question here is this normal ? Not sure if this is something related to the aircraft availability, but it only happens on 8/5 and it is still one month away. Last I check it show the flight is operated by A332.

i call the customer service today and when I ask why is the cancellation, the operator says it could be due to weather or medical emergency. Mmmm… it is still one month away… 😂

It's not uncommon for airlines to have one-off or seemingly random cancellations in advance. Could be due to many reasons -- low demand, maintenance scheduling, crew/aircraft shortage, etc.

These changes aren't usually communicated to frontliners though.

MH had offices in very premium locations around the globe. So far from where they are now

In-town offices are increasingly obsolete. Back in the day it was necessary to have a physical presence to deal with customers and travel agents, but the there’s much less of a need for that these days. I was under the impression that MH being responsible with its money is a good thing.

  4. I’m not seeing anything that suggests TG will be installing some super-premium product on their A320s. It doesn’t even have seatback IFE which puts it in the same category as MH’s 73H.

I know the 73Hs are awful for anything longer than a KUL-SIN/HKT hop, but TG isn’t much better in that regard.

AF for some reason, like QF, can't make KUL work. Maybe with their 789s it might work. They lack of a suitable aircraft for KUL last time (343/346/744 for LH and 772 for AF). AF has 10x flights to BKK and SIN (IIRC, AF pulled out of BKK not too long ago too but has since returned). One of the big problems with East Asia flights is aircraft usage and crew rotation. Crew gets 2 days off here and most flights require an extended ground time. The much higher yield TATL market requires 1 night for crew and immediate turnaround for most flights.

AF seems to be very happy with its QF partnership for its Australian connections. They've even negotiated QF lounge access in SIN, so I doubt they're in a rush to build up their partnership with MH.

KUL-CDG might not be large enough a market to sustain both AF and MH, so it can't be on the wishlist for both carriers.

  6. There's nothing wrong with using off-the-shelf products. Few airlines design their very own products as it's a very expensive process, and even then they're not guaranteed to be good. SQ's custom-made J (both the A359LH/ULR and A380 versions) might be unique but far from the best. They even use generic products on the 738, 7M8, 787 and 359MH.

Their J product just needs to be competitive, not revolutionary.

Their 737 cabins will not affect pax loads cos it is almost the same with other airlines. Seats are getting more and more uncomfortable because the priority is to reduce weight. They just lack imagination in the marketing these days and don't engage directly with their customers. They still rely a lot on traditional sales channels.

Look at it within the regional context. MH's 737s compete against the likes of SQ and TG widebodies, not just the LCCs. It's not loads you have to worry about - it's the yields that matter. The 73H product is wholly uncompetitive on anything over 2.5 hours.

MAG's aim is to operate Firefly in silo, because there are many certifications and procedures that FY is currently lacking and MAG does not want to spend or reluctant to spend money on attaining the across the board certification, cause you need the recruit new/ qualified personnel for those, new equipment kits etc. If they were to sell FY/MH together as connecting partner/OW partner, customers would expect comprehensive services vv. Will create a mess (a good/bad mess, depending on each individual point of view). Sounds like early SQ/MI days, the weird thing is SQ closed down MI, CX closed down KA, MH went against the mainstream. LOL!

I believe MAG has a greater plan for FY to establish BKI as another hub for East Asian routes, fighting with AK on this front, and as the jet operation takes off in SZB, they will leave turboprop operation, leaving on PEN and BKI as jet hubs. MH will eventually return to SZB, if the plan ever materialized.

Not sure what the mess would be. 3K is fairly integrated with QF and has interline agreements with OALs without being a OW affiliate.

Also, comparing FY to KA/MI is just strange. Those two were full service regional arms of the respective parent carriers. FY is much closer to TR, albeit without the connectivity that the latter offers to SQ.

Sometimes I don't get the logic.
I often find the fares to/from Changi on MH codeshares have 30-50% cheaper than MH.
Apart from price the only difference for me is the ticketed beginning 918xxxx, lower luggage, no seat selection until checkin, a manual enrich point claim and.... you seem to get 3 elite points in Y compared to 1 on MH.

    Enrich is another topic lol

Me neither, but I do know an FY code isn't good for OW benefits. Unless you're booked on MH628/606 which doesn't overlap with QR/QF lounge hours.

I think it was at CAPA meeting that the CEO said they are looking at adding another 10 wide body and 35 narrowbody to their fleet (in addition to the 20 339 and 6/7 359).  I can't find the news article but I forgot if it included increasing their proposed 359 count to 10 as well. So MAG will probably have 36-40 wide body by 2027-28, a nice increase from the current 28 today.

The 350s can be used for Europe expansion (*if* they have a fleet of 10) but I don't believe US will be in their radar in the near/medium term. US isn't exactly a place Malaysians frequently travel to. Same goes for Americans to Malaysia. CX, NH, SQ, PR, Taiwanese carriers, ME4 + TK have covered pretty well for MY-US/CA traffic. It's just really far for most Malaysians to travel to and we almost always stick to ANZ and Europe for our "western" countries holidays.

If anything, I'd rather MH return back to JNB/CPT. SQ is taking the bulk of Southeast/East Asia plus ANZ - Southern Africa traffic. Southern Africa is a route less traveled for most Asians, but you get a lot for your ringgit there. Think of it as Europe quality produce at Malaysian price :)

That’s a good analysis. And yes, South Africa is quite an expensive market for air travel. Despite its economic woes it’s actually a fairly high yield market.

If and when they build the second satellite terminal, it might be better to separate the arriving and departing pax. A two level pax terminal should also be able to accommodate more pax.

KLIA’s T1 system wasn’t designed for this from the get go. As noted the Aerotrain system would have to be totally redone.

Have seen on several reports on FB groups regarding issues with the A350 J seats. It seems to be a long running issue whereby the seat airbags deflate rendering the seats extremely uncomfortable and unusable.  It seems that an emergency air mattress/seat cover can be inflated by the crew but isn’t a good work around.

My understanding is that the seats were an off the shelf product however I haven’t heard of such reports from other airlines.

Any idea what the cause of this is?

Deflating seats aren't uncommon. I've also heard of deflating issues on LX J which is from the same manufacturer. While not the same product, AC's 787 and 777 J is famous for having a deflating issue.

The Simulator centre near subang airport is also moving to the KLIA site. Moving will take up to 3 months. Technically nothing training related in Kl city/kelana/subang anymore after this as everything will be in KLIA south near the hangars.

There go the last vestiges of the "old" MAS, for better or worse. I'd be curious to see what comes of the regional hub plan for SZB.

Hahaha, unfortunately nope. Only saw the former B747-400 First Class (the one same as Thai Airways B747-400), B747-400/777 Business Class and some other recliner J class, I think from B737 Classics. Looks to be in good condition.

Great memories on those seats. I wouldn't mind getting one of those for my living room! If anything it'll be a throwback to a very different era.

Apparently they cant do a direct delivery all the way to KUL as there is no dispensation from CAM to do so and MAB is still applying again to allow direct. Plane is coming from America flying east bound

Interesting. Why is special permission needed to fly directly into KUL? Seems awfully inefficient to fly eastbound from California when TPAC is most direct. Reminds me of that BFI-KUL (now SZB) record-breaking flight by an MH 77E in 1997.

On my recent international flight with MH, I noticed that the cabin crew put their hands over their chest (like a normal Malaysian thank you) and then bow at the front of the cabin whilst the purser was making the thank you announcement. I saw them doing it in Y too. Is this a new thing? I haven't seen something like outside of Japanese and Korean carriers.

They've been trying to find some sort of unique cultural greeting (like TG's 'wai' or the Japanese/Korean bowing), and that hand-over-the-chest is what they settled on. It just feels a bit forced if I'm being honest. If only they spent that much effort into actually improving their product.

With AMS’ “green cap” in the news today, I am curious if MH can even get slots at AMS if they wanted to resume AMS.

Airlines with historical slots will receive 3.1% slots less for Summer 24 whilst airlines without historical slots will not receive slots at all. Is MH considered an airline with historical slot?

Maybe it’s time for MH to fly back into CDG, FRA and the likes to preserve slots for future. I’ve read somewhere that ICN is getting close to full as well. And HND (either MH cant make it work or they don’t have a slot).

AMS is sort of unprecedented as they are basically barring any new entrants to AMS.

I don't know about AMS slots, but I can definitely see the merits of resuming CDG. It's really a big gap in KUL's connectivity, and since AF is showing no interest in returning (BKK and SIN are working very well for them), MH has the upper hand here.

MH will get less connecting traffic in FRA, but DE-MY business traffic might just be considerable enough to make it work. They really shouldn't continue allowing SQ to be our de facto national carrier.

You forgot to mention they carried the highest passengers among all the Europe-based airlines. In 2022 Ryanair Group carried 160 million passengers in the calendar year, this was 58% more than Lufthansa Group's 102 million.

It may not be a like for like comparison. I think our back of the envelope calculation of MyAirlines avertage ticket price includes taxes and other fees, not just the fare.

In other words...... just looking at the average ticket price is hardly a fair analysis :)

RM176! Oh dear, how can you sustain an airline company when each ticket is sold on average RM176.......I know I am oversimplifying but......

Ryanair had an average fare of 27EUR (~135MYR) in 2021 and they seem to be doing fine.

MAVCOM needs to seriously review future AOC applications - MyArilines has done more harm than good to the Malaysian aviation industry. Irrational competition is bad for the industry as a whole while healthy, sustainable competition is the way to go.

    14 minutes ago, Izanee said:

Why give AOC then? The competition for low cost low yield routes is crazy. MH, AK and OD are killing each other and all are competing on mostly the same routes.

just leave it like this …

If they denied the AOC, they’d be accused of protectionism by the general public who clamour for cheaper fares. It’s just impossible to please everyone.
