  1. Thanks for the reply Denny. I was actually thinking of going down cadetship route, not PPL.

Since the economy is so bad right now, I am seriously contemplating a career change as my current profession pays relatively badly even during the booming times!

Read somewhere that CTC is top for cadetship program in the UK, followed by Oxford Aviation School and Cabair. But even that won't give them immunity from the credit crunch I guess. Thanks for the warning.

Would you know whether cadets bonded to MAS have to put down some sort of deposit as well?

  2. Hello people,

I've recently applied to CTC Wings as a cadet pilot via the Easyjet careers website. CTC has training bases in the UK and NZ and they train pilots for a lot of airlines (according to their website).

Is anyone familiar with this establishment? They require a £60k bond during training in case they can't find an airline for me after graduation. Does that mean they will take the money?

Also, I have a few stumbling blocks in my path. I will be turning 30 years old soon and I have myopia of around 400 degrees. Is this going to be a potential problem? I might go for corrective eye surgery if they may fail eyesight problems.

I am 5'4" which I think is just OK for 737 or A320 type jets. Will my height restrict me from flying bigger jets where longer reach is required?

Am currently working as a consulting engineer in the UK but I cannot see the career going anywhere.

Thanks to everyone in advance for any genuine advice.

    Regards,

    Andrew

  3. Cheapest is not always better. I remember reading a news article about how Algeria got supplied second hand MiG-29s by the Russians. Not only once, but twice! In the end, the Algerians sent all the planes back and asked for a refund.

I wonder if anyone checked our MiGs to see if they are second hand or not.

Personally, I would not go for the M172s just because its cheap.

  4. Technically, you will have to

    (1) buy up the USAF and

    (2) invite, employ or force the President of US (current) onboard your aircraft

    Oh, not necessarily a 747

That is how I understand it to be - please enlighten if wrong :)

Yes i believe you are correct.

Any fixed wing aircraft that the President happens to be on board is called Air Force One (it could even be a C-130).

Marine One is a rotary winged counterpart.

  5. I thought autobrakes are almost always used...

Reverse thrust act to relieve some pressure and reduce wear n tear on the wheels.

On the same autobrake setting, a landing without reverse thrust will cause the more pressure being applied to the wheelbrakes compare to one with reverse thrust.

If you dont plan to use reverse thrust, then you shouldnt use high autobrake settings either.

  6. when an incident of this extent happens, it's always deemed that "oh it's superficial", "oh surface only"..

actually there are loads of inspections, tests, and checks that have to be carried out one after another before they declare the aircraft airworthy again.

I never said that no tests/inspections are required, did I?

  7. *Gavin, please delete this thread if it has been discussed before.

I havent travelled with MAS for a long time. But anyway, early this month I went back to Msia for holiday. I booked the tickets through the slow and laggy MAS website.

When I checked in, I found out I had been pre-allocated the seats! The check in girl told me that if I had wanted any specific seats, I should have phoned in a few days before flying to reserve. Well, how the hell would I have known that?

I used to be able to ask for seats during the check in process.

The MAS website where I purchased my tickets didnt say anything about phoning in to reserve seats. It doesnt say on the e-ticket either.

So I went to MAS customer service desk to pursue the matter but the guy din really care. He just said, "Well, I cant do anything sir. Now you know you have to phone in to reserve the seat so next time you can do it."

I wasnt the only passenger faced with this problem, btw. Another lady had apparent booked the tickets with MAS office in London and specifically asked to be seated with her children but her whole family got spread out all over the airplane.

Luckily as usual, the cabin crew were very accomodating and managed to help that re-sit the lady's children next to her.

MAS ground staff definitely needs sorting out. And please make the website easier to use. When I log into www.malaysiaairlines.com, my intention is to book tickets, not to enjoy their flashy html features that don't even run smoothly.

  8. Some Malaysian defense enthusiasts says at cari.com that the weapons they used were probably of high caliber..50 bullets were dispensed by the robbers. :help: Even police do not want to tell us what kind of weapons were used. It's that bad.

I highly doubt that the robbers can source .50 caliber weapons in Msia. Even if they can, they must be really stupid to be using them.

A fully loaded .50 pistol is almost as heavy a sub machine gun. The recoil can break arms if not properly compensated.

Malaysia papers never disclose the type of weapons used because they usually can't tell the difference between a shotgun and a pistol.

A small number of Malaysian airport police do carry civillian version of the Glock 17. The mag only holds 10 rounds instead of 17.

  9. Technically speaking yeah, that is the most feasible action to be taken by a raptor.. despite being named Raptor that is. If one day Sukhois are evenly capable of shooting raptors from 50nm in return... don't you think the US would just sent in the B2's and whack their Sukhoi bases before they can even go airborne??? hehehe.. doesn't that sound better than risking lifes in dogfights??? :pardon:

Nope. Even if the Suhkois' weaponry can reach that sort of distance, it would be useless against the Raptor still. Simply because you can't see the F-22 on radar. Therefore no radar lock and no shot can be taken.

Experts do suggest that the Raptor's stealth features do get compromised when they open their bay doors to launch missiles. This is easily overcome by changing location after each missile launch.
