1. In winter, good weather, hard to find...bad weather, everyday.

thanks for the ZRH photo Azman....i wish im there with the cool weather.

Here in Cairo...nice sunny BUT cool...

TK, Come back to ZRH lah... Pieter is coming in a couple of weeks!

One bottle of Kicap Tamin almost gone already (x-mas & new year feast...)

And... no spotting pics from Cairo?

  2. I think different flights, different policies - when I was a student in UK, MH said 30KG and not a single gram more is allowed. (could it be that a restricted take-off weight was applied?)

From ZRH to KUL - 20kg max but they don't seem to say anything if you have up to 30kg.

SQ -20kg plus 10kg for golf bag. Once I had 32KG and first they insisted that I need to take 12kg off. I told the young lady that I have flown with SQ a few times and golf bags mean 10kg of extra allowance - she replied "if you really fly a lot with SQ than you would have elite status and this would not be a problem!". What a b*tch... then I told her to please check with her manager about the golf bag and when she finally did, she insisted that I take "only" 2kg off. So I took out 2kg of swiss chocolates, checked eveything in and then she said that I need to take my golf bag to the oversize baggage drop off area. On the way there, I put the 2kg of chocolates into the golf bag and no one noticed blink.gif What a lapse of security, and scr*w you, b*tch!

Lately, Swiss has also been very strict with weight... sometimes 2 or 3 kg over is ok, but 5kg is definitely not. With hand luggage... swiss is very strict!

I agree with what KLM is doing -they should really enforce the rule and after a while, people will get used to it. Although I also think that if your luggage is up to 2kg overweight, a gentle reminder will do.. I mean, who has a weighing machine at home to check it precisely anyways?

Btw, if MH gets downgraded to a 4* airline... that means the tickets will get cheaper, right? biggrin.gif

  4. yeah weather a bit crazy... last Wed when Helliconia was here... minus 5 degrees and snowing lightly. Friday night was minus 10 degrees and snowing heavily. Saturday night, it was 7 degrees, raining heavily and and all the snow was melting... some parts of Zurich were flooded. Then Sunday afternoon.. ahh... 10 degrees and the sun finally came out! As the sun was setting, all the Swiss came home... (rnwy14 approach)

A330 vs B744 - look at how much snow there was on the ground... There was a snow storm on Friday night but then the temp went up and by the time I took this pic it was already 7 degrees (about 15 degrees higher than the previous night).

  7. Helliconia was here last week... but it was snowing quite a bit... only it's 4th visit to ZRH and never in good weather mad.gif First it was delayed by 1 hour, then another 30 minute wait for startup because all the elephants were busy de-icing, then another hour before it completed de-icing... at least looking at it for the first time made me all warm inside smile.gif

Those red choppers are dangerous... could eat you whole...

In fact, I saw an old Bond movie yesterday "on Her Majesty's secret service".. one of the bad guys fell in front of this machine and was killed, and the bloody snow was sprayed out... James Bond said "well, he had lots of guts..." laugh.gif how corny...

  9. Tk, very interesting!

One question - I was watching the action in ZRH a few days ago and noticed that almost all the heavies required de-icing but almost none of the 737s or babybus needed de-icing. Why?

You mentioned something about the ice being dangerous as it may affect the lift... does this mean that for smaller aircraft, they have more runway length to play with so ice is not a problem?

Btw, Heliconia was in ZRH this week, and de-ice gave it this interesing blue with orange glow...

    Thanks.

  10. CDG airport had an interesting idea - if you build a donut shaped building, then the furthest part of the terminal is actually only "half" the distance compared to a terminal airport which is square. So if you are looking for a bank to get some foreign currency for example, you wouldn't be faced with a situation where you have to walk from one end of the airport to the other end. Instead, you could just take one of the walkalator tubes to get across to the other end of the donut.

Nice idea... but didn't work because most travellers would just start walking in one direction until they come back full circle (especially when the bank was just behind them when they started!). tongue.gif

Of course, now it is also old and grubby.... and the new part (terminal 2) is already falling apart sad.gif

  11. Read on a certain blog he has an English wife there...

    21405

I don't want to throw more fuel to the rumour but this has stirred up somethin from the past - Some 10 years ago, when I was a student in London, my friends sister visited and she was working for the securitirs commission. Then we bumped into my friend's neighbours and she looked a bit surprised and said hello to the guy. Then she told us that it was her big boss, MM. A few days later, she found out more from chatting with the neighbours and told us that apparently that was his "family".

Ok, a couple of years after that, back in KL, I was chatting with this guy who claimed that he knows MM. So I mentioned the family to him and he was quite surprised and said that no, that can't be right, because he has a wife and young child (children?) in KL... I must be mistaken. Well, I assumed then that I was mistaken and forgot all about it until i read this buffet story. Hmmm.. maybe I wasn't mistaken!

Does someone know his age? I need to do some calculation...

  12. As for Kicap...it will be the new service delivery from MH 777 direct from KUL.

Actually i pity Azman, he may have miss some of the local food here in KL, but then....life is like that. You win some and you lose some.

    Hang on there Azman...

    21424

hehehe... Everytime you guys post some food pics (especially that thread with pics from some roti spot) I go nuts blink.gif Gosh TK, when you were telling me about Nasi Dagang... oh mannn... Nevermind. Next time the service delivery will include some serunding (Pieter: err... spicy beef floss?) from TGG right?

Imran, sorry I hijack your Milo - I also hantu Milo lah... sometimes cannot sleep without Milo. The one in the pic is the South African version. Not the same but I hentam anyway. And yeah, funny enough there is no Milo here in Nestle's homeground. I already emailed them about it but no reply!! mad.gif

  13. TK, Azman absolutely fantastic!

Arrgh... arrived 7.29am this morning so I missed it. It would have arrived on runway 14 as well - would have been a nice picture.

So I am going to watch our for the departure.

Snowed quite a bit over the last weekend... then the clouds went away, we thought we would have perfect spotting weather, but then the fog came mad.gif Don't know how to set the camera for this kind of shitty weather... a huge struggle even in post-processing.

  17. Hi Pieter, thanks for the report and nice pics!

A318 very short but still have 3 classes?

Love the 3-4-2 seating of the MD-11. Was the same on the Swiss ones too. You could travel in 2s, 3s, 4s, no problem. The best is if the plane is less than 90% full then you and your companion have a good chance to sit on the ones with the 3 seats.

Wonder why no triple7s have same arrangements?

  18. Norman,

Barb wire twisted by spotters who bring their own ladder. They actually twist the wires together so that they get slightly bigger space to put their lens through. You can bet that the spotters who bring their own ladder would also be the ones with the 100-400 lens so they really need some space!

Walter - dock E viewing gallery closed in winter probably because they do not expect many visitors. Dock B is still open, and in the summer they provide buses to dock E. I suppose with the cold weather, demand is quite low so they don't want to provide the buses. In addition, the real hard core spotters who don't mind the cold also think that the sun position from Dock E is not very good for photos. So cold weather plus lack of interest from hard core spotters = not much demand.
