1. I looked at teh skytrax website and this seems to be not teh same as teh "airline of the year" thing. This is something like skytrax's own academy awards.

Maybe teh airline of the year thing will come later...

  2. Ahh. I see, Fabian's pic. Yes, I was with him that day. He's one of the ZRH gurus. You should check out his other pics. Later that day he got one of the best shots ever - a Swiss A340 landing with the Alps in the background! He has very few side-on shots because he prefers the more challenging shots.

I did not send mine... well not yet. Have a few in the queue and it takes 10 days....

  3. The way I see it, it is not about religion but about how people treat others, the double standard and all the farce about it.

Agree with this. If you read books about this subject which were written in the 50s and 60s, you can see that this has nothing to do with religion. So I guess, to garner more support, the fact that the palestineans happened to be muslims was played up.

And Malaysia is also not playing straight up here.... I have per chance come across some business done between Malaysia and Israeli companes (offshore)... yes, I was surprised, but when it comes to $$millions... anything goes. Don't quite expect people to suddenly have a moral issue when they are corrupt in the first place...

Anyway, I read somewhere that 30% of El AL workforce are security personnel. 60% of their budget goes to security. El Al is more expensive than other airlines, but the passengers are assured of getting everything kosher, so they don't mind paying for it. The requirements for Kosher are very strict, and from what I see, orthodox jews are a lot more fussy about it than muslims. Different utensils for meat, different ones for veg, etc.

  4. Min Chun,

There are a few MH777 turning onto rnwy16 pics on A.net. None of them is mine :(

    Imran,

yeap, 2 Thais came in on the same day. One regular A346, and the other is a 345 rerouted from Milan because apparently the catering there was on strike. So they had to pick up food from ZRH.

  6. Agree with Norman,

It is low cost because you only pay for minimum. Anything extra means you pay extra.

In Luton, if you have an Easyjet receipt, you can ride the bus for GBP5 into London west end (I think... maybe gone up now). Otherwise, you can take the train also for a discount. This solves the parking issue. Easyjet encourages people to use the bus/train and the bus/train gets good volume so do not have to charge too much to break even.

I think I would not mind having to pay up to 50sen or RM1 to transfer between terminals... the only problem is that if you are an international to international passenger, would you have RM1 on you?

Khush - I challenge you to some interactive games onboard! (if it doens't break down...) Maybe we meet at lounge? Please PM me your tel.... I guess you already know what I look like?

  7. When they say Low cost air terminal, I didn't expect much. Luton in the UK is really like a warehouse. But the shops in Luton is the basic kind of shops you get on the high street I would say, but nothing fancy. No aerobridge, so when it is cold and rainy, you have to really run to the aircraft. But luton still has the basic stuff like car rental desks, taxi counters, simple restaurants... just like a train station. The airport tax is low, and this makes a huge difference. Swiss and BA had the same basic fare with Easyjet for Zurich-London, but the airport tax difference between Heathrow and Luton is more than RM150. Even then, Easyjet has stopped flying to ZRH and now only fly to Basel from Luton, because even the airport tax in ZRH is too high. I hope that LCAT also means lower airport tax for passengers, otherwise, to whom do they pass the savings to?

Wonder if there are shops in the terminal, would they be low cost as well? Would the canteen be like a hawker food court with normal prices? Everything must be consistent with low cost, right?

And the location.... they could not have chosen somewhere further. If I look at the grand plan of KLIA, with the second MTB in the future, this location is very remote!

  8. dublin airport... I've seen many cross wind landings there.

Interesting feature of the airport is that the US immigration seem to be stationed there to pre-clear passengers for the US. So when you arrive in the US, you just have to pick up your luggage and go! Nice feature, but I wonder how the US will react if Ireland insists on having Irish officers in a US airport!

Great pictures Eric! and Pieter.. waiting for yours!

  9. Azahang.... before you go for spotting... Try Nasik Dagang - "Merchant Rice" :p :p - at Makcik Akah stall located at tmn permata.. next to DBKL Hall... This Kampung Ladang makcik is really gud on her "Merchant Rice"

Now.... MW is food forum already...

AHH.. I knew I could find some really important information here on this forum. Gonna stopover in KL at the end of the month and looking forward to some real food. So is this the best Nasi Dagang in KL? Any other recommendations? I also heard something about kampung baru - near the nasi lemak stall or something?

    thanks guys!

  10. I flew Air NZ from SIN - AKL, and all I needed to check-in was an e-Ticket which I printed out myself. It was sent to my e-mail as a pdf document.

The 'slip' your friend used, I'd imagine it's something similar to the one I used. When my parents flew SIN - AKL on EK, they also used a printed e-Ticket like Air NZ's.

If I'm not wrong, SIA also uses e-Ticket for all flights booked online. Sadly though, e-Ticket is only used by MH for domestic flight. My sister booked online for an international flight with MH and had to queue at the city office to collect her ticket. (!!)

Yes, this is the trend these days to move towards e-tickets. With Swiss, almost all destinations are e-ticket destination. When you make a booking, they will email you a receipt with your itinerary. For most destinations, you don't even have to print it out and bring it with you. For some more "difficult" destinations where you have to show "proof of onward travel" to the immigration officer, etc., then you should print it out. If you insist on a paper ticket, they Swiss will charge you something like RM30 for it! For places where there is no e-ticket facility, they send you a ticket which also acts like a boarding pass. When you check in, the gate no., seat no., boarding time, etc. will be printed on the same ticket, so it becomes your boarding pass. All this will save money...

For me, it is a lot more convenient too - no more lost tickets! Some years ago, I lost my MH ticket and boy it was a lot of trouble to get a new one issued... I even had to do a police report!

  11. hmm... interesting to see in today's newspaper that there will be a few more "tours" this weekend.

The World Economic Forum is being held in Davos this week and a lot of interesting traffic is at ZRH. Mostly private jets and govt. planes. Helicopters have been flying over my office non-stop today to ferry the people from ZRH to Davos (about 100km south of here).

So there will be about 5 tours on Saturday and Sunday, but this is like one of the regular tours that they do in the summer, mostly driving around the apron and maybe a few stops here and there. The tours last 2 hours..., and I don't think that they will be as accomodating as they were for us. But still, it is a tour...

  12. Really nice camera: see my ZRH shots...besides, it's heaps cheaper than D70s with only a few less features, which, you won't be using for aircraft spotting anyhow...but, everything will stand with a good lens, though, so it's not only the camera you should look for  wink.gif

    26792

Yeah look at the ZRH shots, especially Air Nostrum/Iberia. Mine is 350D with post processing. Pieter's is straight from camera and looks at least equal quality. I think Norman also mentioned something about D50 pictures looking very good straight out of camera. I suppose it would appeal to people who are crossing over from P&S cameras.

There is a cash back offer for the D50 with kit lens here at the moment = RM2100. blink.gif Almost half the price of the D70s!

In the end, don't forget the lens. Any camera with a lousy lens will be handicapped. I think from all that I have spent, 30% was on the body, 60% on lens and 10% on accessories (memory cards, bag, etc). So getting the body is just the start....

  13. PVG running at a loss ? MH flies there twice a day if it's a loss making one certainly the frequency would have been reduced by now ?

SQ flies to PVG 4X Daily as well.

    26584

I've read a few times that routes are being reviewed because a huge portion of them are not profitable. So the knee-jerk solution is to cut those routes.

From my opinion, if MAS can reduce its costs by better management of its finances (which is the main problem in the first place), then the majority of these routes will become profitable, right? Of course it is different with political routes such as EZE, but if the cost base is low, then the apparently huge loss on this route would also be reduced.

If I think about it, MAS has an advantage compared to SQ in terms of cost base, i.e., based in Malaysia means that a lot of resources are cheaper. So this also means that MAS needs a slightly lower load factor compared to SIA to actually break even.
